Winter Is Coming! Be Prepared!

Winter is on its way

Winter is on its way. Are you prepared? Do you have a winter storm kit set up in case you lose power in your home? How about a kit for your car? Take precautions and plan ahead. Its also a good idea to practice it in advance of impending storms. This advice is good for not only winter storms, but emergencies in general. After all, if you live in tornado or hurricane country, many of the same rules apply.

Practical Emergency / Winter Storm Tips:

* Have a family communications plan in place. You should designate someone that lives outside of your area as a contact point. Make certain that all of your family members know how to contact this person, in case your family becomes separated.

* Make sure you have an emergency cell phone. If the electricity goes out your landline phone may not work. Even a traditional landline phone that isnt cordless may not work if the electricity goes down. For sure your cordless phone wont work since the base is run by electricity.

* Keep your cell phone emergency ready. This means making sure your battery is fully charged, and perhaps even having a spare battery also fully charged. You can purchase an inexpensive replacement battery, along with a spare battery charger. Another option is to get a USB Emergency Portable Back-up Battery or even a DC to AC car charger which will let you charge your laptop or run any electrical device. It never hurts to have all your ducks in a row. In addition to your cell phone being fully charged, you should have all your emergency contact numbers and email addresses programmed into your cell phone. These numbers should not only include friends and family, but also the police, fire department, and emergency medical care numbers. During the storm itself, keeping your cell phone dry is super important. Try keeping your phone in a Ziploc bag. Another important tip is to keep your emergency calls to a minimum so you wont be using up your battery life, nor clogging the airwaves if there is an area wide emergency.

* Learn to send text messages. During an emergency, text messages will often go through quicker than voice calls because they require less network resources. In addition, you can subscribe to weather text alerts to keep apprised of what to expect. If you have a Smartphone, you can also check for the latest news and storm alerts with online browsing.

* Use your cell phone camera or digital camera to document storm damage. This will make your insurance claim so much easier. Again, if you have a Smartphone, you can email these photos directly to your email address to save for later.

* Have your emergency plan in advance of actual emergencies. In addition to planning for emergency communications, remember to have flashlights with new batteries, some water set aside, as well as warm blankets and some food that doesnt have to be cooked. Be sure to have a non-electric can opener included in your emergency kit. Its also a good idea to have a duplicate emergency box in your car as well.

Winter storms are treacherous. Be prepared.
