Winter Preventative Maintenance On Your Vehicles

The cold weather of winter months can wreak havoc on a lot of different things

. It can cause chapped lips, dry skin, and it can even do damage to your car on a regular basis. You might not realize it, but snow and ice causes wear and tear on your tires, the brakes on the tires since they are in contact with the salt and sand on the road, and the engine of the car. In order to make sure all of these parts function properly throughout the winter and that you don't get stranded somewhere, having preventative maintenance done on your car before winter arrives is a smart idea.

Check the Fluids

The antifreeze in your car might have had a workout if it was a hot summer. Make sure that the coolant levels, also known as antifreeze, are where they should be in your engine. The correct amount of antifreeze will stop the water particles in the engine from freezing up. The antifreeze will ensure your engine will not get locked up from excessive moisture forming in the engine if you run your car for a long time because the heat will build up in the engine.

Other fluids to check include the windshield wiper fluid and the oil. When it snows, that means it is messy outside. Dirt and salt can be kicked up from the road and thrown onto your window. Then, it could block your windshield. Having windshield washer fluid at its full supply will ensure that you keep it clean and will be able to see. The oil needs to be checked so that the levels remain where they are supposed to. Depending on how cold your region is, you might need to switch consistencies in the oil so that it is a kind that doesn't freeze in extremely cold temperatures. A 5W30 blend might be better for your car than a 10w30.

Check the Tires or Add Chains

Air particles are automatically different in size when the temperature is different. For example, when it is hot, they will expand. When they are cold, they will shrink. A tire that might have been fine on a warm summer day might not look as if it has enough pressure once the cold days of winter begin. Don't just guess on the pressure, but actually check it and see if it needs to be adjusted to the correct level. You might need to add a little bit more air so the tires are inflated to the proper level.

Have a Winter Safety Kit Inside

No matter how safe you think your car is, you will always want to be prepared for any emergency. This also includes preparing for things that can happen to the people in a car if you're ever stranded. Having an emergency kit in the car should contain a blanket or two, bottled water, a stash of packaged food, and even a candle or two if you need a source of light. Having a first aid kit might also come in handy in case a minor accident is what caused you to be stranded in the first place.
