Kia has two exciting engines available with their Sportage SUV: the 1,975 cc 4 cylinder inline engine is available only in the Sportage LX model while the 2,656 cc v6 engine is available in either the Sportage LX or Sportage EX models. Both engines are made with an iron block and cast aluminum heads.

The 1,975 cc inline 4 cylinder engine features a Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) configuration with continuously variable valve timing (CVVT). This technology constantly adjusts the valve timing in relation to intake, the fuel system, and exhaust as the engine is running. The effect of CVVT is more power delivered uniformly throughout the RPM range and lower engine emissions. The compression ratio of this engine is 10.1.1. The power delivered from this engine is impressive: 140 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Engine torque at 4,500 rpm is 136 foot pounds. The average fuel economy for this engine is 22 miles per gallon (mpg) in the front wheel drive models and 21 mpg in the all wheel drive model.

For customers looking for a little bit more power in their Sportage, Kia offers a V6 engine with a considerable performance boost, although at some detriment to fuel economy. This 2,656 cc DOHC engine boasts 173 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 178 foot pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. The compression ratio of this engine is 10.0.1. The gas mileage for this V6 engine is 20 mpg in every configuration.

Kia's decision to offer two engines in its Sportage product line continues in the 2010 model. While by no means exceptional in performance, these two engines offer customers options for either fuel economy or performance.
