Women 'spend hours trying on ladies fashion items'

Retail therapy is a firm favourite among British women

, it has been suggested.

According to research conducted by Lambrini, female shoppers try on a total of more than 21,000 items of women's clothes during their lifetimes.

And it is often not love at first sight when it comes to such garments, with more than half being returned to the shelf as the search for the perfect look continues.

The study was based on a poll of 3,000 women and it also discovered that 84 per cent of respondents revealed they often only go out to 'window shop' but end up returning with items anyway.

Meanwhile, one in two of those surveyed admitted they regularly try on ladies fashion offerings without having any intention of parting with the cash.

This phenomenon could be particularly at the moment as consumers who are concerned over their personal finances in the wake of the recession continue to count the pennies and cut back on expenditure.

Responding to the statistics, Sue Beck of Lambrini told the Daily Mail: "For many women, trying on different clothes is often the best part of a shopping trip.

"Hours are spent in changing rooms with friends trying on weird and wonderful outfits you wouldn't ever dare wear out in public.

"It's also an excuse for some of us to try on clothes that are designer and beyond our budget."

The research also discovered that female consumers hit the shops an average of four times a month and, during the course of their retail excursions, they try on ten tops, pairs of jeans, or shoes.

Of these, only five are bought over the course of a typical shopping spree.

In order to tempt shoppers to part with their money for women's clothes, many retailers are offering good deals at present, both online and in high street stores.
