A common misconception shared by some women is that they will 'bulk' up if they exercise their muscles with strength training. You may have heard these outdated arguments or maybe you have even used one of these arguments yourself.Traditionally, women have focused more on 'cardio' type activity such as walking, jogging or cycling. In addition to low intensity endurance activity women have tended to focus on the dieting aspect of getting in shape and restricting calories. Dozens of studies have now shown over and over again that these methods are not the most effective in acquiring the strong, lean, slim healthy body that most women (and men too) would like to live in.Without toning and maintaining muscle tone you can never have that type of body. It is simply not possible without good muscle tone and a metabolism (the body's engine) that is in excellent health. These things do not come with food restriction and the long, slow types of activity that we have been doing for the last 30 years.We now know that dieting and cutting calories and doing things like hours of walking actually add stress to the body and make it harder to lose weight and get into good shape. You are in essence working against your body rather than with it. And this is a battle you will not win in the long term.When you focus on cutting calories, your metabolism will slow down because the body perceives this as a starvation threat. As soon as it wakes up to the fact that there is a sharp drop in the number of calories it is getting every day, it will slow down the metabolism to hold on to every scrap of body fat it can. This starts the 'no win' cycle of more calorie restriction and more long slow activity to try to get results.Women who add strength training exercise to a proper diet, which focuses on 'clean eating', portion control, macro-nutrient (protein, carbohydrate and fat) balance and not simply calorie restriction will see fat loss and body toning results three times quicker in half the time outlaid.The benefits of a proper strength training exercise program, especially in a weight loss program, can be huge. It takes more calories to maintain a body that has firm toned muscle tissue than it does to maintain flabby fat. Therefore, simply by strength training and adding some toned muscle to your body, you will burn more calories round the clock whether you are working out or sitting on the couch watching television.And this really is the secret to losing excess body fat, increasing the efficiency of your fat burning machinery (your metabolism). The old way was simply about burning fuel (calories) during an exercise session. The new way is about doing what is needed to raise the metabolism so the focus is on what happens after the exercise session is over.Strength training plus healthy eating is the way to go and you will reap many other benefits as well as fat loss. Strong muscles create strong bones along with a strengthening of all of the bodies systems and processes. That is something you will never receive from the old dinosaur exercise methods.
