. As one advances in skill and acquires more woodworking tools and equipment, the shop must be able to accommodate these additions.

Current and future projects play a big role in the amount of space that you'll need. The goal at all times when building or expanding is efficiency, cost effectiveness, and safety.

Many woodworkers dream of having a huge space devoted to woodworking with a beautiful view of the great outdoors.

Unfortunately, not everyone has enough property or has a scenic view in their backyard. But, why not make the most out of what you have?

Planning

Start with some well-thought planning. First, it is important to decide what kind of woodworking you want to pursue. Are the projects you'll be working on small or large in nature? This is important because the kind of tools, machinery, and work surfaces you will need depends on the size of the projects you intend to undertake.

Layout

With a limited space, arranging all the stationary tools and fixtures may pose a challenge. Using scaled graph paper, create a layout using scaled drawing cutouts of the larger tools and fixtures.

Consider what layout works best for you. What is most comfortable?. Having workbenches and storage cabinets of the same height make these double as infeed and outfeed tables. An outfeed near the door can accommodate long or large workpieces.

A folding workbench is practical rather than a traditional one that eats up space even when it's idle. Stationary tools can be placed on rolling bases when not in use. The best strategy is not to buy anything too big that will be seldomly used anyway.

Storage Solutions

Maximize your space with the use of storage solutions. As a woodworker, you can put your skills to use and build custom storage cabinets that are tailored to your specifications. Consider what tools will be placed in them short-term and long-term.

Get create, use every little nook and cranny to your advantage. Use the walls to save valuable floor space for tools that cant be stored on cabinets.

Other considerations when building a workshop include safety devices, electric outlets, lights, among others. Regardless of the design of the shop, never fail to be practical and ensure safety precautions.
