Workaround: Google contacts sync issue for Samsung Vibrant smart phone
I figured out a workaround for the very irritating contacts issues surrounding google contacts
. The issues is google syncs all or nothing and does not sync your groups. google includes every email recipient that you've sent something to, since you opened your account. This can result in thousands of google contacts to sort through.
In order to use the groups feature in the contacts menu on the phone, the contacts need to be saved to the phone itself. Google contacts are stored on the google servers, so you can't group them once you've got them.
1.) go into your google contacts from your gmail account on your computer. At the top of the new inset window you'll see "My Contacts" and below that you'll see all of the groups that you developed. Highlight the words, "My Contacts" You can also export individual groups, however, I see that it saves each file as the same name, so you'd have to open them each in an application such as excel and resave them under a different name, yadda, yadda, yadda, and I just didn't feel like going through all of that. I figure for the number of contacts I have, I can categorize them from the phone. If you want to try exporting individual groups, please document how it goes in the comments.
2) On the right side of the inset window you'll see three options to "Import", "Export" or "Print". Choose "Export" It will ask you which type of file. I chose the middle type, Outlook CSV. Once it's finished saving, you're ready to progress to getting them on the phone.
3) Connect your phone to your computer via your USB data cable. Windows XP seems to just work, while in windows 7 you have to acknowledge a prompt on the screen of the phone.
4) Find the Outlook CSV file that you just saved and copy it to your SD card on the phone.
5) Un-mount the SD card and disconnect the phone. If at some point following this, you get the message that no SD card is installed, then just reboot the phone. I have continual problems with this, but the reboot seems to correct it along with going through the unmount procedure again.
6) Go into your contacts and tap the menu button followed by the more button. Choose to import from SD card.
7) When it's finished, you'll now see that when you look at your contacts, each one that duplicates a google contact will have both an icon of a phone and an icon for google next to it. That means that they are linked.
Eyes Rolling Go into the contacts menu again and choose display options. Uncheck the google contacts and you should have only the contacts left displaying that were in that CSV file. They should still update with google contacts because they are linked, but the google contacts no longer are displayed.
I've been frustrated with this for the past days. I hope the results of my frustration helps others with the same issues. You can read more of my tips at http://www.samsungvibrantforum.com as I post there daily.
