Working From Far Away: Wireless Internet For Business From Chicago To Vegas
It used to be that business was confined to the office
. Those who went on work-related trips had to check in constantly, rough it on their own, and figure out ways to get the right information where it needed to be. This meant that while on the surface, hitting Las Vegas for a convention might be fun, in theory, it meant a lot of time spent on the phone or receiving faxes at the hotel front desk. And for anyone who is serious about doing a good job, taking work out on the road was a surefire recipe for a bit of stress. After all, communications are tough enough in person; getting things accomplished from a remote location is only more trying on anyone.
Fortunately, the development of speedier web access and more far-flung network connections meant that going on the road for business was no longer a total calamity. Wireless internet in airports made delays a whole lot more manageable, and most hotel rooms embraced the ethernet connection. Where there wasn't internet already, there were often places that had it. Especially for international travelers, finding a web cafe was not such a tough thing to do after 2000. And more ubiquitous interweb connections also meant that wireless internet was far more popular than ever before.
Wi-Fi was a major leap forward for business travelers because before, where finding a location with web access was key, Wi-Fi meant that there were more options. Most hotels, especially those catering to business travelers, started to offer it. Conference centers also got on board, meaning that getting a bit of work done before a conference was now possible on-site, rather than frantically last-minute back in the room. And with better routers able to beam signals further and further, those using Wi-Fi no longer needed to crouch right next to the source device to stay online with four bars.
The trouble with regular wireless internet, was still in its propensity to suddenly dip out. After all, depending on something that basically magnified a signal was simply not enough to get the job done for most computers. Whether getting ready for a big presentation in Las Vegas or simply trying to write a long email to the home office in Chicago, Wi-Fi had a tendency to duck out right when it was needed the most. And that could cause a lot of unneeded stress, not to mention midnight drives around town looking for a place to get online.
However, Wi-Fi is still making leaps forward. One of the latest innovations to staying connected from anywhere for business takes the old-school approach that everyone wants to get online from random spots and combines it with the ubiquitous coverage that cell phone companies offer. After all, users who are making calls in different area codes don't need to worry about whether or not their cell phones are going to work; it happens automatically. And WiMax does the same thing for getting online. Because towers are in place all over the country, all that it takes is flipping open a computer. The signal carries for dozens of miles, rather than a couple of feet, and this means that hitting the road for work doesn't change how strong a signal will be.
In the world of fast-paced business, having an even faster-paced connection to the world wide web has never mattered more. For those hitting the road for work, or for anyone who is sending major players out to work from far-flung locales, it makes a lot more sense to move beyond traditional methods of connecting. After all, it only makes sense that wireless internet, like the rest of the world wide web, is currently evolving.
