Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway - China

The Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway commonly referred to as the Jinghu Railway, represents a milestone in the Chinese railway history linking China's two most important cities, Beijing and Shanghai. With a total length of about 1,318 kilometers, its a high speed railway moving at a speed of 350km per hour and covering the distance in 4 hours 48 minutes. There are two types of trains running on Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway including D train and G train. The Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway runs through seven provinces and urban areas - Beijing, Hebei, Jiangsu, Shandong, Tianjin, Anhui and Shanghai and also connects two main economic zones in the People's Republic of China, the Yangtze River Delta and the Bohai Sea Rim. This rail line is also the world's longest high-speed line ever constructed in a single phase.

Shinkansen - Japan

Japan's high speed train Shinkansen (Bullet Train) connects Japans two main islands of Honshu & Kyushu. Shinkansen in literal translation from Japanese means new main line. These high-speed lines were built like European and North American standard gauge (4' 8"). It runs at speeds of up to 300 km/h (186mph) and is more like an airplane without some of the hassles. Despite its high speed, Japanese Shinkansen approved itself as an exceptionally safe type of transport. The punctuality of this Japanese high-speed train is also exceptionally high with the average annual delay being less than one minute even in peak load its no more than 3-4 minutes. There are now a whole range of 'Shinkansen' lines linking all the most important cities in Japan, including Niigata, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Hakata and Kagoshima. The Shinkansen is a world leader and has transported more passengers than any other high-speed line in the world, totaling about 151 million a year.

Eurostar - England

The Eurostar high-speed railway connects London with Brussels & Paris, running undersea through a tunnel beneath the English Channel. The Channel Tunnel itself possesses the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world, and has been identified as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The Eurostar runs at speeds of up to 186mph (300km/h) with an average speed of 135.4miles per hour and reaches its top speed during this stretch of the journey. The train, which runs on 25 kV 50 Hz power has been built to carry nine hundred passengers. Eurostar is the only train in the UK operating at average speeds which are as fast or faster than the maximum service speed of the UK's domestic train services. The fastest recorded journey time between London and Paris is two hours 10 minutes and 14 seconds at an average end to end speed of 140 miles per hour. At present the Eurostar carries more cross-channel passengers than all airlines combined due to its record-breaking travel time.

Intercity Express (ICE) - Germany

The Intercity Express or ICE is Deutsche Bahns fastest train and the most comfortable way of travelling on the German network, reaching speeds of up to 320 km/h. ICE made its debut in 1991 and today there are 5 varieties ICE 1, 2, 3, T, & Sprinter. The Deutsche Bahn ICE train connects all the major German cities such as Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Munich, Cologne, and Berlin. Cross platform interchanges from ICE to ICE are possible at many stations without long walking distance in between. All ICE trains are user and family friendly, offering special facilities for the disabled and changing stations for families with babies. The comfort and convenience of the ICE are unmatched with fully air-conditioned carriages having low noise levels and eliminating any ear discomfort. Currently the ICE trains are in the works to include options for a higher capacity as well as provide a faster train that would take curves quicker than the traditional trains.

Train Grande Vitesse (TGV) - France

TGV, a high-speed train operating at a speed of 300 km/h in normal service is the flagship product from the French rail technology. The TGV holds the world record for speed on rails of 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) or roughly half the speed of sound. This high-speed train service was originally developed in the 1970s and opened to the public in 1981. Following the inaugural TGV service between Paris and Lyon in 1981, the TGV network, centered on Paris, has expanded to connect cities across France and in adjacent countries. At present the train travels around 150 cities in France and several foreign cities located in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Italy and Switzerland. There is nothing quite like a ride in a TGV and even when leaving stations just off the main line, a departing TGV may already be flying along at 100 km/h by the time it clears the platform. In fact, the maximum speed of a TGV is about twice the speed of a 747 at takeoffif the train had wings, it could fly.

Alta Velocidad Espaola (AVE) - Spain

The Alta Velocidad Espaola (AVE) is the Spanish term for high speed, while the term ave refers to a bird, runs at speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph). The AVE is the most recent of the high speed rail designs reaching speeds up to 186 mph and operates on standard gauge track, where most of the Spanish rail network is a broad gage. This Spanish high speed has more than 2.900 kilometers of service connecting more than 20 Spanish cities, such as Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Malaga and Valencia. It occupies the first position in Europe by number of kilometers in service and the second one in the world only beaten by China, which has a network reaching 9.600 km. Also, this Spanish train is considered to be the most punctual in the European Union (with 99% punctuality) and the fastest, reaching 310 km/h on the connection Madrid-Barcelona. The Ave system has absolutely nothing in common with the Spanish relaxed attitude towards time and on the route between Madrid and Seville, RENFE (the Spanish railway company) assures an arrival within five minutes of the advertised time, offering a refund if the train is delayed further. It has till date stood by its assurance for on time arrival and only 0.16% of trains have been delayed more than a few minutes. Punctual indeed!
