Would You If You Could?
Think French
Think French. Paul Rozin, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, compared American and French diets. The French eat smaller portions - even the portions at McDonald's and at pizza parlors are smaller. The French also eat more slowly than Americans, who tend to eat on the run not realizing how much they are actually eating. It's true the French don't go to gyms as much, but they are more active overall. Thus the French can eat a higher fat diet, but still have a lower level of cardiovascular disease and a longer life expectancy. It's a biological "French twist".
Smile at strangers. In a study published in the journal Psychological Science, a stranger/researcher passed by 239 pedestrians. Some were acknowledged with a smile or a nod and some were deliberately ignored. Immediately after the encounter another researcher asked each pedestrian to fill out a survey. People who had gotten the cold shoulder felt more socially disconnected than those who had received a smile or a nod and people who hadn't encountered the stranger/researcher felt emotionally somewhere in the middle. When excluded - even briefly - we feel worse about ourselves. To quote Mother Teresa, "Peace begins with a smile".
Don't change your weekend schedule. If it's significantly different from your weekday schedule - if you sleep later, sleep longer or stay up later - it has the same effect on your body as changing time zones. In a study published in Current Biology, this is referred to as "social jet lag". Every hour of social jet lag increases the risk of being overweight or obese by 33%. This is attributed to insufficient sleep increasing the body's need to store fat. In fact, people who sleep less - even starting as infants - have a greater risk of obesity. Lack of sleep puts fat if "fat-igue".
Be optimistic. Using a 98-point questionnaire, a study published in the journal Aging assessed the personalities of 243 people age 96 and over. The majority of the near-centenarians had positive personality traits. They were optimistic, easygoing and liked to laugh. Because they were outgoing, they had stronger support networks and more opportunities to be cognitively engaged. They were also likelier to express their emotions, thus reducing stress. In 2012 approximately 53,000 Americans are centenarians - that's 0.2% of the population and growing. If you aren't an optimistic person, there is time to change. However, while you're practicing, avoid the news.
