Excerpt:

It was the summer of 1942 that Klaus got a real taste of what Barak was capable of. It confirmed what he had known all along, that he was right to fear him. He had been walking through the camp when he spotted Barak and one of the prisoners. He stood still and watched as Barak stood over the man. The prisoner was shaking so hard that he could see it was taking all his effort to stand upright. He was trying to speak but he was so afraid that the words just wouldn't form and all that he could hear was an incoherent muttering. It was a type of fear that Klaus had never witnessed before, not even in one of his own subjects.

He couldn't understand what Barak was saying either. It was a language he was unfamiliar with. It sounded as if it may be French but he wasn't sure. Klaus was a bit too far away to catch it. As he shouted at the man the ground seemed to be shaking under his feet and Klaus started to feel unnerved. The next thing Klaus saw shook him to the core. Barak looking straight at the prisoner lifted his arm into the air. He proceeded to lower his arm and the bolt of lightning hit the unsuspecting man's skull and then followed through the rest of his head and torso until he was cut in half. Klaus didn't have any way of quantifying the event but he knew just the same that Barak had done this. He had always known there was something different about Barak but this was spectacular. He wanted, no needed to know more. He knew that it would be a dangerous exercise getting close to Barak. However his curiosity was such that no matter what he had to know how Barak had managed to summon lightning at will. Klaus wanted this power, he needed to harness it. It was the key that he needed to complete his work.

It's a cleverly crafted non stop action book that's a lot of little stories within a story, with a real diversity of people and situations that make it unique. Once you start it there is no putting it down.
