Wow - A History
In 2004 a phenomenon hit the internet that has never been equalled when the World of Warcraft was released. WoW (World of Warcraft) is popular with millions of players across the planet and due to its phenomenal success it is unlikely that any other online role-playing game, or MMORPG, will ever match its success.
As of 2010 World of warcraft is the most successful of all the Blizzard titles and has outgrown and eclipsed all other Warcraft titles. However, it is also the most successful online game ever created!
Since its initial launch date back in 2004 WoW has become a true online gaming phenomenon. Even from its release it has impressed game critics all over the world and has captivated the imagination of up to 14 million players at the height of its success.
Nowadays World of Warcraft has levelled out at a very respectable eleven million active gamers.
World of Warcraft may be the most successful online game ever released but it has become so much more than that.
World of Warcraft is not the first game to take place in the world of Azeroth. The very first game in the series was titled Warcraft: Orcs and Humans which was so successful it spawned a sequel.
The next game in the warcraft series was the Tide of Darkness which was released in 1995 to both critical acclaim and instant success in the gaming market. In 2002 Blizzard Entertainment released the last single player game in the warcraft series - Warcraft: Reign of Chaos. This was the most successful warcraft game released to that point.
After this release Blizzard, the game's creators, decided that no more game titles would be released in that format but promised that an online game based on the Warcraft series would be released instead. Azeroth was to become a virtual world that existed online and which could be inhabited by hundreds of different creatures and thousands of avatars controlled by real people.
Blizzard's statement received positive feedback from both game critics and warcraft gamers alike. However, it wasn't until 2004 that the first online warcraft title became available in America.
Almost every country in the world has World of Warcraft players who have different backgrounds and social standings. When it was at its most successful World of Warcraft attracted fourteen million active players.
Today WoW has a consistent eleven million players who actively play the game.It would appear, therefore, that the online world of Azeroth is not going anywhere.
