Lizard Medicine
When a Yellow Lizard jumped at me during a dream, I researched lizard medicine from the native american medicine wheel. I found that it was the shadow side of reality where your dreams are reviewed befroe you decide to manifest them physically. I like to think that the dreams which followed were the the shadow side of reality that one day I could make manifest.
I was on a pilgrimage. We had gone by boat. Some detour had been made and I was trying to figure out how we had crossed a certain green area. I had a papal affiliation paper to show we had permission to celebrate an official liturgy. My brother Joe was a priest and was to celebrate this liturgy. I was explaining to some man how important this liturgy would be for my Dad because Joe was his son, even if he were adopted.
I had a map and I invited others to come with me. There were three parts: we would enter the religious education center near underground catacombs, climb a mountain by step ladder and proceed to St. Columba. I remember the rainbow over the mnountains. How I loved the mountains!
In retrospect, these dreams seemed to predict my future travels which were unbeknown to me at the time. However since I had just read about lizard medicine, I wondered if I could someday make a pilgrimage to this beautiful green area with mountains and St. Columba. It seemed to be Ireland.
Tribe of Juda
Some dreams are experiential. They lack words. You just experience. A very brief but extremely powerful dream was that I experienced being the cub of a mother lioness. She was playfully patting me with her paw. Upon research, I found that the lion is a symbol of the feminine power. A young lion was often the symbol of the risen sun and all that is implied by it. The idea of the young lion being associated with the rising sun is most significant as it reflects the rising of feminine energies. This was for me the beginning of a very profound relationship with members of the cat family. Although it was not until several years later that this feminine energy truly blossomed.
Waiting for Death
Some dreams are simple to interpret, while others take years and years until the light finally dawns. The following dream was one of the more difficult, at least it was for me at that particular time of my life.
I was being put to death in an institution by means of an injection of serum. My friend was also being put to death. Two women attended me. The bottle contained dark liquid and I was to hold it in my hand. I walked through a crowded room. One man looked at me sympathetically. My friend and I were in a room containing a folded cage in which we had waited for death before. There were two small tables, one with two chairs. We decided to sit on the floor and wait for death. I remembered dying twice before--once in this same manner. I had walked in heaven. Now I said relievedly, "This is the end hopefully." My friend was weeping. I saw a dustpan, small broom and another dustpan by the fireplace. I straightened them and joked about leaving the place in order. My friend laughed. I lay down, turned on my side to sleep while the liquid coursed through my veins. I awoke shaking seeemingly from the liquid coursing through my veins.
Since my dream was so very vivid that it continued into my waking hours as shaking, I thought that the dream was particularly significant. I thought of death and all its symbolic meanings, yet the fact that I I awoke shaking as if really immersed in the scene completely puzzled me. Years later I would return to this dream, better equipped to deal with it.
Spiritual Insights
My favorite kind of dreams are those which give a literal spiritual message. They affirm for me what God desires and they seem to be "a letter from God". Such were the following three dreams which were simple to interpret:
I was praying, very earnestly, "MARY, PLACE YOUR SPIRIT WITHIN MY LIFE", asI bowed and moved backward.
I was giving avocation talk. I was dressed in part old habit and part secular clothes. Heidi, mydog, was with me. I put my notes on the back of a music podium and opened my dream journal. I was thinking of the mystery of God's call and how I was called to be a religious and how this differed from that of married people. When questioned about the habit, I responded that ours was the cross, then simple and modest.
I was in a classroom sspeaking of the gifts of the Spirit whcih I named as Wisdom, Understanding, Wonder and Involvrement. Someone seemed to take exception and said that this meant church not P.T.O. I responded that it could include P.T.O. as it was church inthe broad sense ofthe term. It was church in action.
As I ended the year 1983, I was especially grateful for a year in which I was able to look at my shadow side without guilt and even with laughter. I also felt called to continue placing the spirit of Mary within my life and being open to true feminine energy.I decided that the butterfly would be a perfect symbol for this new life in 1984.
