York visitors will always enjoy a trip to the beautiful and ancient city York, England. There are so many ancient streets and buildings with many reminders of an amazing history.
York was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, and "Eboracum" became one of the leading cities of the Roman empire. The Roman leader Constantine the Great was declared Emperor in York in the year of AD 306.
The Roman occupation of York ended around AD400, and (after following a fairly quiet period in York history) the Anglo Saxons invaded. In 601, the catholic Pope Gregory wanted to convert the British to Christianity. As a consequence York became the church's centre in the north and a period of church building followed.
York became "Eoforwic" but by 866 was taken over by Vikings led by Ivan the Boneless. The last Vikings were finally driven from the city on 954, but they had managed to leave huge cultural impact on York.
The Domesday Book (1086) showed that half of York was owned by the King, and the other half by Normans. The rebuilding of what eventually because the current masterpiece York Minster was begun around this time, and it took 240 years for the Minster to be fully completed. Yourk Minster is now considered a Masterpeice.
At this time York was also considered a major city, and second only to the capital city London in terms of size and prosperity.
From 1212 until 1974, York was a self-governing city under the influence of its own mayors. This was a result of the local citizens of York gaining original authority from King John(the "Robin Hood" villain!)
In 1349 York was very badly affected by the Black Death which apparently killed half the population of the town.
King Charles 1 left York in 1642, but the Parliamentary opposition had grown strong. Civil war was declared and in April 1644 a large Parliamentary army began the siege of York. In June 1644 Charles' nephew Prince Rupert arrived supported by over 150,000 troops. However, this was to no avail, and the city surrendered on 15th June 1644.
The heads of many of the defeated soldiers and royals were placed on spikes around the city! Fortunately many of the great buildings and churches in York were spared, and survive to this day.
York eventually benefitted from a superb central main modern train station (established in 1839), and York station is now less than two hours to get to London by train.
The city that modern York visitors will get to see is an amazing open air museum with streets, roads and buildings that still exist to remind the moder visitor of a rich and colourful past.
