It is therefore important for them to understand the process of HPHT and just how it changes diamonds.

During the last few years the HPHT process has been used to change the colour of gem quality diamonds. It was actually General Electric that made some startling discoveries within this field. They used this process to improve certain types of brown diamonds into a much clearer, colorless state.

Another company called Novadiamond also made some groundbreaking advances by transforming brown diamonds to yellow and green colors. Though there are various companies nowadays that use HPHT to produce synthetic diamonds, it was these two that changed the commercial synthetic diamond market as we know it. Novadiamond made a diamond press known as a prismatic press. This press cost several million dollars to build and is computer controlled. It produces temperatures around 2300 degrees Celsius, by passinga current through engineered thermocouples. While the heat is created by the thermocouples, hydraulic arms apply significant pressure from all of the angles. Pressure reaches 65000 bar. That is equivalent to almost 950 000 pounds per square inch of pressure!

There's also some Russian scientists which have used HPHT inside a BARS apparatus for several years. In this device, extreme pressures and temperatures are once more utilised to grow synthetic diamonds as well as change certain colored diamonds to neon colors.
