You Don't Need To Be Into Crafts To Be Original
One of the first ways in which children learn to express themselves
, apart from crying loudly for attention that is, is to get creative with all sorts of bits and pieces. They say, give a child a cardboard box and it will be happier with that than with the expensive toy inside it. Pull up a chair and watch this kid's imagination flow as it turns this simple cube into a space ship, a doll's house or a weird and wacky hat. For children, the possibilities are endless. Give them some colouring pens, sticky tape and pair of safe scissors and they will go that extra mile, turning the box into a whole planet, robot or imaginative board game.
In the early years, children are encouraged to take part in creative play, in the sand pit or water play area at school, or with a lump of plasticine, piece of scrap paper and brightly coloured poster paints. Children love to get their creative ideas down on paper. So what on earth happens to the creative streak that is within us all when we get older? Where does it go to? I believe that it stays there, waiting for us to pick up a paint brush, crochet hook or sketch pad, ready to be set free on another road of exploration of our imagination. After all, it is a very basic thing, to be creative. Ancient cave paintings have shown just how long ago humans were recording life in such a way and archaeologists have discovered some magnificent statues, monuments and shards of pottery to indicate the creativity that has always been in us.
Perhaps, with our busy schedules and hectic and demanding lives, we just do not have the time to sit down and make something beautiful with our hands and this is how we lose touch with the skills that we developed when we were younger. Of course, many people go on to become architects, fashion designers, makeup artists and interior designers and these are the people who continued to be creative even when the pressure of school exams impinged on their teenage lives. I am a perfect example of someone who was extremely creative in my youth, even studying at art college, before pursuing a nine to five job and domestic bliss. I have recently returned to the joys of crafts and have become a mad knitter and keen potter, even selling some of my work to those who appreciate something a little different.
When it comes to buying cards, however, I would not dream of giving a handmade card. I love the originality of personalised cards.
