During our 20s and 30s we rarely consider more about our sexual health than engaging in safe sex. We become aroused easily, thanks to the abundant levels of estrogen and androgen. Estrogen helps our vaginal tissues stay pliant and healthy; androgen controls our desire and arousal. We claim our right to satisfying sex and have few worries beyond STDs or pregnancy. Some of us, however, have difficulty becoming aroused and lubricated. Self-esteem falls, and we think we're just not normal.
Finding the Cause
Some women have lower levels of hormones that can cause a lowered sex drive and/or reduced lubrication. Consulting a physician can help determine if there's a medical reason or if it's just in one's physical make up goes a long way toward calming doubts and fears.
If there's a medical cause, work with the physician to counter or cure the problem. If it's natural, don't worrythere's still hope.
Ways to Improve Enjoyment
Some women take longer to mentally and physically feel fully aroused. Asking a partner to slow things down, engage in more touching and loving before engaging in the physical joining may help.
Stress can play a huge part in our sex drive. Work, family, and even friends can add layers of stress in our lives that hamper feeling sexy and sexual. Worry about finances can drain more than bank accounts. While it's difficult at times to just drop burdens for sex, learning to put them down for a while can ease tension enough to promote arousal.
Physical fitness can help increase and balance chemical reactions and hormone secretion. Stay physically fit for extended enjoyment in a healthy sex life.
If all else fails, and you feel aroused and want sex, but your body doesn't produce sufficient lubrication naturally, don't hesitate to use commercial lubricants and creams designed for sex, such as Sylk and Sensation. Sometimes, we fall into a sexual rut. Changing time, positions, duration, and intensity can help relieve boredom and frustration. If you have children, some advanced planning may be called for. Change the routine, and you often increase the odds of having wonderful sex.
