Your Guide To Texas Continuing Legal Education Courses

Every active attorney in the state must complete requirements for Texas Continuing

Legal Courses in Education, and there are many different rules, regulations and guidelines that have to be followed in order for the process to be completed correctly. There is a minimum of 15 hours that need to be completed during each compliance year, and out of those 15 hours, at least ten have to be earned in the form of seminars or formal courses. Five of the hours can be in the form of self study activities, and these can include listening to audiotapes, viewing videotapes and reviewing legal periodicals and publications. At least three of the 15 hours have to be in the area of legal ethics and professional responsibility, and one of those Texas Continuing Legal Courses can be completed in the form of self study.

Each member s compliance year begins on the first day of the month in which his/her birthday occurs, and the initial compliance year will be the 24 month period of time that starts on the first birth month that follows the date of admission. Texas Continuing Legal Courses are required of every member, and any courses and self study that is in excess of the minimum required 15 for a compliance period will be applied to the following compliance year s requirement. This provision however only applies for one year.

The Texas Continuing Legal Courses should not exceed thirty hours in any compliance year and can be earned for attending a law school class, provided that the member completed the course as required by terms of the registration and the member officially registered for the class with the law school. Credit for that attendance will be for the actual number of hours of instruction time that the member was in attendance of at the law school.

Two months before the end of a professional s Texas Continuing Legal compliance year ends, attorneys will get an MCLE Annual Verification Report at their preferred address. When the member gets this report form, they need to review it all for accuracy and completeness. If everything is correct and it shows that the minimum requirements have been met, no additional action is required by the attorney. If there are any omissions or errors, the member needs to correct it according to the instructions. To avoid fines and suspensions, everything needs to be completed, received and filed by the Texas Continuing Legal Courses or MCLE Director on or before the end of the compliance period.
