Your Team is Lazy Because Your Goals Are Hazy

The # 1 reason that teams fail is because of shabby goals. Without crystal, clear goals a team cannot function because it has no direction. When a team has no direction it's impossible for its members to give a full or complete commitment. It's also impossible for a team to know where it's going or how to get there without a shared vision.

In order to properly accomplish corporate objectives your team must work together as a finely tuned unit. The entire team must know exactly where they are going, how they will get there, and the exact steps required to complete the tasks at hand.

Here are three powerful, time-tested steps that will get your team up and running in no time. Although the steps are basic; every corporate and business structure must have the following ideas deeply integrated into their foundations. Many businesses all over the world have called these steps a "Prescription for Success."

Step 1: Create a team vision statement framed in the vision of your organization. Your vision statement simply expresses where your team is going. Your vision statement must challenge its members to reach for higher ground, it must absolutely reflect your organization's core values, and it must be easily understood by all the members on the team. The vision statement is actually a verbal and written reflection of your teams "preferred future state." The vision statement for my company is that, "people and businesses are using our information to enhance their business and the quality of their lives."

Step 2: Create a team mission statement. There is a major difference between a vision statement and a mission statement. A vision statement expresses where your team is going while a mission statement states how your team will attain the vision. In order for a mission statement to be effective; like as vision statement, it must contain several indispensable components. Whereas a vision statement reflects the vision of your organization, a mission statement must reflect your team's core purpose. However, it must still support and exemplify the vision of your organization or it will be weak. It must incorporate and integrate all departments and their functions. It must challenge your team to reach for higher ground, yet it must be absolutely attainable. When I combine the vision and mission statements for my company is reads like this: "To provide information and education in an entertaining format to enhance the quality of our client's business and personal lives."

I travel all over the country, and have presented my business seminars to thousands of businesses and corporations. However, it never surprises me when the most successful businesses I visit have their vision and mission statement framed and posted throughout the building. They serve as a ringing reminder for employees to stay on purpose and remember the vision.

Step 3: Establish Goals. Goals are essential for your team's success because they provide your team with an effective plan for moving forward. Your goals must clearly state tasks, assignments, functions, responsibilities, timelines, schedules, and follow-up. Your team will flourish quicker if the goals are specific, attainable and have a deadline attached. Be sure you assign each goal to the team member most equipped to reach the goal at hand and you'll be moving at warp speed in no time at all.
