Youth Driving
A safety conference on London has this week decreed that by banning young motorists
from driving at night, drinking alcohol or carrying teenage passengers, two hundred deaths could be prevented per year on the streets of the UK. Safety campaigners are at their wits end about the amount of young drivers killed on our roads due to distracted driving, and are seeking to implement rules much like those imposed ni California. There, children under the age of twenty can drive, but at night they have to be accompanied by an adult, and are not allowed to drive other youths unless an adult is present.
The idea of Graduated Licensing (GL) mimics that of other countries too, such as Canada and Australia, and imposes strict rules on drivers for up to two years after they have passed their test. If the statistics are right and a whopping twenty five percent of drivers killed on our roads are under twenty five, then this will not only reduce the amount of lives lost, but will reduce the stress of funding on the NHS considerably too.
Critics think that despite this taking the pressure off the National Health Service, this will add strain to the police forces, meaning that they have to up man power and make sure that youngsters are sticking to the new laws. They say that bad driving is the cause of road deaths as opposed to inexperienced drivers, and that the added stress will limit our police force in other ways.
Supporters have also stated that
Car Insurance premiums would be greatly reduced, especially for younger and male drivers.
