Youth Unemployment
Considering all the headlines about recession and unemployment
, it is hard to accept that over 40% of employers still have vacancies which they are finding it difficult to fill. However, that is the sad conclusion of a recent report by Gerwyn Davies of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
The problem seems to be that, in the UK at least, there is a serious mismatch between what companies need and what schools and universities are actually turning out. This mismatch has been known about for some time but unfortunately there is along lead time between taking the necessary steps to rectify it and seeing the results.
Only if you have been living on another planet would you have failed to see that we have simply not equipped enough youngsters to fill even starter positions in the sectors which are growing "" like life sciences, engineering and electronics. Instead we have let whole generations indulge in woolly, humanities orientated education, which has produced hundreds of thousands of generalists for whom demand amongst employers is dwindling.
The Coalition government has moved swiftly to guide / steer far more youngsters towards science subjects and to make sure that all school leavers have a sound grasp of mathematics, but steps like these will take at least a couple of years to have any impact.
In the meantime, a surge in the number of apprenticeships, particularly in manufacturing, may be the best that UK Plc can hope for.
Sadly, however, it is just not a lack of the right technical qualifications that is exacerbating youth unemployment. Many teenagers fall short on basic standards of literacy, numeracy and communication skills. Others simply have the wrong attitude altogether and cannot even get to work on time in the morning.
All too often, employers, particularly in the hospitality industry, will "play safe "by recruiting immigrant labour from countries such as Poland and Lithuania. They are generally assumed to have the right work ethic and not so "precious" as their British counterparts when it comes to performing fairly mundane roles for which they are usually over-qualified.
Recruitment advertising in order to obtain the best staff for your business is important. Using a recruitment advertising specialist will ensure you get the best people for your organisation, which are keen to work hard and learn a lot. Help to shape the next generation.
