I encountered, for the first in October two thousand and ten and at the age of seventy seven autism for the first time; and in my seven year old grandchild this wretched condition. I use the word wretchedsince his is apparently,the worst case scenario.I had no real appreciation of the communication problems this condition entails;,although I do recallwatching a television programmewhere two afflicted children were possessed of extraordinary talent.One of them was able to produce a detailed sketch,first time with no erasuresafter a short glimpse of theNew York skylinein America. The other little boy could hear a piece of music and then play it note perfect seatedatapiano.They mustbe adults now and how their lives have turned out I don't know.

There are three referrals to autism in my copy of the English dictionary.to those who have not learned of thecondition.

AUTISM : a disturbance in psychological development in which use of language, reaction to stimuli, interpretation of the world, and the formation of relationships are not fully establishedintheusualmanner.

AUTISTIC :indicatingautisme.g.failureusinglanguageandperceivesurroundingsnormally.

He has a younger brother just turned two years of age and my hope is that as this little boy gets older the elder boy will compete since at this time he certainly demonstrates no order in things. Certainly no talents are apparent at this stage.

I shall not live long enough to see him grow inadulthood but if circumstances do not change my daughter will have to cope with his condition for the rest of her life.She does not intend putting him into care and this time he is delivered and collected daily from a voluntary special needs establishment.

His condition is likely not to have improved when I hope to see him in June2011. He is a lovely little boy and surrounded by love from his stepfather and stepfather's parents. This affords me a great deal of reassurance regarding his future.
