"My main responsibility as political leader is to empower youth of India": Rahul Gandhi
BHOPAL. October 06, 2010. "My job as a political leader is to give a structured platform
to dreams and aspirations of the millions of the youth of our country and for this, an attempt has been initiated by the Congress party to open the doors of politics for the youngsters through fair and free organizational electoral system," stressed Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, while answering a query in the press conference in Bhopal on Wednesday, on his becoming prime minister in future.
He was interacting with the media on the concluding day, on Wednesday, of his three-day visit to Madhya Pradesh (MP).
Further delving on youth and politics in the country, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi elaborated and said, "I would like to see the most able person as the prime minister and so far, Dr Manmohan Singh has been the right person to lead the country."
"We are challenging the political parties in our country that youth should be given major role to play for transforming the nation to greater heights. For past 60 to 70 years, youth below age of 40 years, though comprising 70 per cent of total population, has been kept out-of-bounds by the political parties in this country. Only we, the Congress party, has initiated the process for induction of youth in its youth organizations like Youth Congress (YC) and National Students Union of India (NSUI), through fair and free organizational elections," elaborated Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
While addressing the media persons, he said that usually membership in political organizations are by nominations but only the Congress party has initiated a process of membership through elections for its youth organizations, YC and NSUI. "We have covered almost half of the country and the process in this direction has begun in MP, too," stated Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Citing the case of Tamil Nadu, he said that before the membership drive, there were only 35,000 YC members but after organizational elections, the same has gone up to a whopping 14.5 lakh. To a question on differences of opinion among senior leaders of the party, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress party is an open forum where discussions are allowed.
"As far as I am concerned, I have my clear-cut job definition and that is, the responsibility of YC and NSUI. India has about 70 per cent of total population below 40 years. Our aim is to open the doors of the politics for the youth, so that they could play active role and their voices are heard in politics," said Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
On being a state guest of MP, he said that he has come here to meet people and his primary responsibility is to create an enabling environment for the youth of the county to become instrumental for taking India to greater heights. "Whether I am a state guest or an aam admi', my job is well-defined and that is to empower the youth of our country," said Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
"Wherever I go, youngsters ask me only two questions and those are, education and jobs. My job is to empower them by transforming the educational system. It is much more difficult to build a structure for empowering the youth and it has not happened for past 60 to 70 years. We discuss issues ranging from Kashmir to Commonwealth Games to Ram-Janam Bhoomi and many more. But, majority youth want a transformed political environment for adequate space for them," elaborated Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
"For the youth today, as I hear often, Ayodhya and such issues are not important but for them education and jobs are more relevant. If we do not transform our educational system then we will have to struggle in future," warned Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
To a query on packages from the Centre for backward regions, he said, "I had visited Bundelkhand in the region some years ago and found many serious problems facing the region on its way to development. There is a central problem that packages by the Centre for development of backward regions, are not being utilized properly and the need is to improve the situation."
On being asked about the recent verdict on disputed land in Ayodhya by Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said that the verdict has not mentioned anything related to violence and destruction of the mosque. "But, there is other legal process and the aggrieved parties are free to approach the Supreme Court in this connection," said Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
