For most Americans, the state of Alaska remains a mystery, since it is too far away to comfortable visit for most. However, if you never visit this breathtakingly wild state, you will be sorely missing out. Anchorage is one of the busiest, most tourist-friendly cities in Alaska, and offers an interesting history to boot. Russian explorers had established themselves in southern Alaska by 1784, but English explorer Captain James Cook is credited...more

Just as Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" is kept up as the trilogy to which all illusion trilogies are inevitably likened, I've minor uncertainty that Larsson's Millennium series will play that benchmark role for mystery thrillers over the next few years."The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest" is an unbelievably deserving successor to the previous two books in the trilogy. And toward the end, there will be moments when tears are brought to your eyes. Larrson knew precisely how to play with timing, tempo, and wording to pace the story and its ending just perfect. I'm hard pressed to even guess how else he could have finished this series. The story follows the natural conclusion of the events in the first two books as all dovetails toward a "behind-closed-door" trial. Larrson did a very good job of the first part of this book that takes place in the hospital where Lisbeth is retrieving. You will really enjoy reading things from her perspective, then spinning out to others involved and each of their limited pieces of the evolving puzzle. And things just get better as the book moves along.Frankly, once you hit part three of the book, it's almost impossible to put down. I...more

"A candle, you know, is not now a greasy thing like an ordinary tallow candle, but a clean thing, and you may almost scrape off and pulverise the drops which fall from it without soiling anything." – Michael Faraday, The Chemical History of a Candle, London 1908.Today, when we think about candles, we think about ambience or ceremony, pleasing fragrances and soft flickering lights. Candles are part of life's little pleasures, and candle making is an enjoyable craft. Historically, however, the candle played a much different role, and candle making was a basic necessity. In the colonial days of the United States, after the sun went down, the options for light were limited: bonfires, tallow candles, grease lamps, or rushlights. Grease lamps were shallow iron bowls that held grease, oil, or tallow. There was a wick holder, and different apparatus to facilitate attaching the foul smelling lamp onto the wall, the back of a chair or a table. Rushlights were made by stripping away the outerlayer of common rushes, soaking them in grease, and the allowing them to harden. (According the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture (arhomeandgarden.org), "Common rush...more
