iPad Now On Sale in China
Apple rolled out its new iPad in China last week and people were queuing up to purchase them at stores across the country
. China is the world's biggest market for internet and sales are expected to be brisk for the iPad following a somewhat disappointing debut there for the iPhone. Though the iPad has been available for some time on the grey market, many consumers have waited to buy theirs from official Apple outlets.
Apple has made an effort to roll out its new products earlier in China and the sluggish sales of the iPhone have been blamed on the delay in getting it to the Chinese market. Many people either bought their iPhones on the grey market or bought similar phones from competitors in the Chinese market. Apple seems to be attempting to remedy that problem with a much quicker rollout of the iPad to China and other countries.
Apple has estimated that sales will reach around the 2 million unit mark during 2011, but it remains to be seen just how many Chinese are ready to fork over the money for the comparatively high-priced pads, which are priced at 382 for the wifi-equipped 16GB version and 533 for the 64GB model.
Some analysts predict that the iPad will also appeal to Chinese consumers because the iPad will require no service contract, and that may be one of the reasons it will outsell the iPhone. The iPhone needed long-term contracts and most Chinese consumers seem to prefer a pay-as-you-go system or a one-off fee when it comes to phone service.
Apple plans to have 25 new stores built in China by 2011 and these should help boost sales of the iPad and also the new iPhone 4, which is scheduled for rollout on September 25th. Consumers can purchase 16 and 32GB versions with or without a contract. As China continues to become hooked into the new technologies (4G networks are planned to debut this year), those who
call China home are embracing the wireless revolution, and connecting with the rest of the planet through the internet and cheap or even
free international calls on their computers and phones. The iPad is just the latest addition to an ever-expanding worldwide communication network.
