Asbestos Dust And Dna Damage

While studying the impact that asbestos dust has on workers, it is important to examine multiple factors such as data regarding smoking habits, age and other clinical and radiologic data. One interesting study is called, The role of catalytic iron in asbestos induced lipid peroxidation and DNA-strand breakage in C3H10T1/2 cells. By C. J. Turver and R. C. Brown - Br J Cancer. 1987 August; 56(2): 133136. Here is an excerpt: Abstract - The...more

Asbestos Exposure In The Water Supply And Excess Cancer Mortality

Exposure to hazardous asbestos has been a problem for over a century. The common form of exposure typically came from the workplace. However, that has changed as asbestos has been found in the water supplies of various municipalities. One interesting study is called, Cancer mortality in relation to asbestos in municipal water supplies. By Wigle DT - Arch Environ Health. 1977 Jul-Aug;32(4):185-190. Here is an excerpt: Abstract - The mortality...more

Mesothelioma Can Be Underestimated In Death Certificates

One problem that has plagued spouses of the deceased workers that were exposed to asbestos is showing that mesothelioma was the cause of death. There is some evidence to suggest that the incidence of mesothelioma has been grossly underestimated. One interesting study is called, Validation of death certificates in asbestos workers by M. L. Newhouse, J. C. Wagner - Br J Ind Med 1969;26:302-307. Here is an excerpt: Abstract - Newhouse, M. L., and Wagner, J. C. (1969).Brit. J. industr. Med.,26, 302-307. Validation of death certificates in asbestos workers. The Registrar General has supplied the certified cause of death of 436 past workers in an asbestos factory. An attempt was made to follow up the 301 (69%) deaths which had occurred in hospital or had been the subject of an inquest or coroner's post-mortem examination. Necropsy reports were obtained for 158 (52%) of this group and histological material was reviewed in 84 (28%). The additional information, particularly that obtained from review of the histology, led to the revision and extension of the diagnosis suggested by the certified cause of death in a number of cases. The incidence of carcinoma of the bronchus had not been...more

Asbestos Exposure And The Carcinogenic Threshold

One question that has puzzled many researches is whether or not there is a definitive threshold regarding levels of asbestos exposure and disease development. One interesting study that explores this issue is called, Asbestos - the TLV approach - Ann N Y Acad Sci. 1976;271:152-69. by Nicholson WJ. Here is an excerpt: Abstract - A review of the...more

The Excess Risk Of Cancer After Asbestos Exposure

One interesting study is called, Mortality from all cancers of asbestos factory workers in east London 193380 by G Berry, M L Newhouse, J C Wagner - Occup Environ Med...more

Smoking Can Increase The Number Of Asbestos Fibers In Airways

Asbestos workers that were smokers have an increased incidence of disease. Another interesting study on point is called, Cigarette smoke increases the penetration of asbestos fibers into airway walls. By D. McFadden, J. Wright, B. Wiggs, and A. Churg - Am J Pathol. 1986 April; 123(1): 9599. Here is an excerpt: Abstract - For study of the penetration of asbestos fibers into airway walls, guinea pigs were given amosite asbestos by intratracheal instillation. Half of the animals were also exposed to cigarette smoke. Animals were sacrificed at 1 week and 1 month, and numbers of fibers in airway walls were counted in histologic sections. In both smoke-exposed and nonexposed groups, numbers of fibers per square millimeter of airway wall increased from 1 week to 1 month in the respiratory bronchioles. At each time period, smoke-exposed animals had significantly higher numbers of fibers in the airway walls, compared with nonexposed animals. It is concluded that 1) continued transport of fibers into interstitial tissues may be the reason that asbestosis can progress after cessation of exposure; 2) cigarette smoke increases the penetration of fibers into airway walls. This effect may play...more
