One interesting study is called, "Insulation workers in Belfast. A further study of mortality due to asbestos exposure (1940-75)." - Br J Ind Med 1977;34:174-180 – by P C Elmes, M J Simpson. Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - A follow-up study of 162 men already working as insulators (laggers) in 1940 has been extended from 1965 to 1975. By the end of 1975 there were 40 survivors when 108 had been expected. Until 1965 there had...more

One interesting study is called, "Specificity of asbestos-induced chromosomal aberrations in short-term cultured human mesothelial cells" - Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics Volume 41, Issue 1, August 1989, Pages 33-39 by Kenth Olofssona and Joachim Mark, a Department of Pathology and Cytogenetics, Central Hospital, Skövde, Sweden. Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - Short-term cultured normal human mesothelial cells were exposed for 48 hours to three different asbestos compounds, crocidiolite, chrysotile, and amosite. In the concentration used (0.01 mg/ml) all three asbestiform minerals caused, within a few days, a significant increase of cells showing numerical and/or structural abnormalities. The abnormalities were analyzed in detail using banding techniques. The results were compared with the cytogenetic observations in 52 published cases of mesotheliomas. This comparison revealed only a few similarities as regards numerical deviations. The structural rearrangements in asbestos-exposed cultures, however, in many instances involved chromosome types and chromosome regions preferentially affected in mesotheliomas."Another study is called, "Recovery of ingested...more

One interesting study is called, "Radiological abnormalities and asbestos exposure among custodians of the New York City Board of Education" by Levin, S.M. ; Selikoff, I.J. - Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences; (United States); Journal Volume: 643. Here is an excerpt: "Six hundred sixty custodians employed by the New York City Board of Education underwent examination from 1985 through 1987 for asbestos-related disease and other general medical conditions by the clinical staff of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Medicine of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York. Two-thirds of the men (no women were examined) were 20 or more years from onset of any custodial work, with 44% having had at least 20 years of employment as custodial workers in New York City Board of Education schools. Twenty-four percent had begun custodial work in buildings 30 or more years earlier. Findings among them were of particular interest since asbestos-related disease might forecast what might be expected among school custodians with less seniority. Since the Board of Education, in selecting custodians for examination, had chosen only...more
