Landlord and Tenant United: A Residential Management Success Story!

In the recent fight against bed bug infestation, which has been on the increase for at least a decade, there are tenants and Property Management Companies who are feeling some relief.

When Ray, a property manager in Ottawa, discovered that one of his units had bed bugs, he knew that he had to do something. Once we knew the one unit was infested, then it quickly spread to the next. Before we knew it, they had moved up a floor.

Ray, although he did not want to disclose his real name or real property management number, allowed us to interview him for this article. It was great to get some support from someone on bed bugs. At first we were all alone and it seemed like we were losing. We were just running to catch up.

The fear of finding their rental property addresses listed on the bed bug registry or some other website was not acceptable. We knew that it was a sensitive subject for the board and for the tenants, but what can you do? We didnt bring them in, but we have to get rid of them. A lot of people feel embarrassed to admit that they have bed bugs, but they travel easily and are in 5 star hotels, on cruise ships or riding the transit.

Bed Bugs are a dirty word and there are many misconceptions about them. Perhaps that is why they are spreading so quickly. It is said that after the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Australia, over 90% of the hotels had bed bug infestations. How do we stop it? According to Dean, education is very important, but having bed bugs living in your mattress is the same as you sleeping next to the fridge. You are their food source, so blocking them out of your mattress and box spring is your first line of defense.

When asked about how he feels about the program now, Ray said Its great because we now have our board members calling in to order, they get covered and we get covered and people respect that we have set this up.
