This football team represents the University of Texas at the games of the NCAA FBS

. The team belongs to the Big 12 Conference currently but over the course of its career has been a member of various other conferences as well as having been an independent team. The total number of conference wins it has garnered is 32. A good 129 of their members have been named All-American players. Twice the Heisman Trophy was received by a player. Nineteen of their men have been admitted into Halls of Fame. The College Football Hall of Fame enshrined 15 while the NFL Hall of Fame accepted 4.

The total record of the team ranks them third in the category of the team with the most wins. Their record reveals 845-318-33 or a rate of winning amounting to .720. Other achievements are having the second most frequent invitations to Bowl games, ranking 8th for the most number of plays. 8.5 out of every ten polls include them in the top ranks. More than 33 % of the time, two polls will judge them to belong to the top ten teams and nearly half of the time they manage to get into top 25 lists.

It was in 1893 that the first University of Texas football team was deployed against the Dallas football club, then reputedly the best in the state. After the long and dusty skirmish, the Texans had managed a surprising upset of 18-16.

The team was first under coach R. D. Wentworth. He began with an impressive routine and managed to shutout six of their enemies with a decisive record of 191-0. However, Missouri won over Texas 28-0. More shutout victories were in store for the team under Wentworth. In 1894, Texas A&M went down with 38-0. In the same year, Arkansas bowed out with 54-0. Oklahoma was later on humbled 28-2. The team's record for this period was an amazing 207-57-12.

In 1913 and 1914, the team won two championships while affiliated with the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The year after that they changed camps and joined the Southwest conference. They bagged the championship for that conference in 1920.

The team has won, all in all, 32 conference championships, the last three being in 1996, 2005 and 2009 when they had joined the Big 12 Conference. Its four national championships were taken in 1963, 1969, 1979 and 2005. In all but the 1970 win they grabbed the succeeding Bowl event.

They also grabbed three Bowl Championship Series games. These were in 2005, 2006 and 2009

All their coaches have managed to leave them with records of more wins than losses. This accounts, in part, for the fact that the team enjoys great popularity with football buffs.

The team or some of its members have been honored by various awards. These include the Heisman Trophy for Most Outstanding Player, the Chic Harley Award for College Football Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award for Best Football Player, the AP Player of the Year for Most Outstanding Player and the Walter Camp Award for Player of the Year.
