Growing a great corporate culture can be as simple as growing a mustache.

Countless companies have joined the international Movember campaignworking to build their teams while raising money for cancer researchby encouraging their male employees to grow a 'stache, keep it groomed throughout November, and then celebrate all that growth with a party at month's end.

Now let's not split hairs here. Female employees can get in on the team-building too, by cheering on their coworkers, adopting mustache accessories, and even sporting fake muzzies if they wish.

Movember (a playful take on "m" for mustache and "ovember" for the month of November) started in 2003 in Australia and has quickly expanded to other countries, including the United States. This year alone, the campaign has raised about $100 million for prostate cancer research, which is donated through different national charities, including the U.S.A. Prostate Cancer Foundation, and Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

It's a team building exercise that's easy to join and can give lasting benefits, not only because it unites staff, but also because it gives the company's brand a boost of good public relations in its community.

Let's look at the company SlideRocket, which has embraced Movember ever since the group used the company to help promote its efforts.

Movember is not just for the boysit can be inclusive. Ryley Kornelsen made a new Movember accessory for every day of the month.

"We think Movember is not only a great way to help raise awareness of men's health issues like prostate cancers, but it's a fun way to get involved with a cause," said SlideRocket's Chief Operating Officer J.J. Freitag in an email interview.

"The organization first came to our attention when we discovered they use SlideRocket to help promote their effort. We are delighted that such a great cause is using our platform to spread the word. As evidence of our support, we are promoting the organization on our blog and most of the men in our company are sporting new facial hair. We even have a fake 'stache' for the women!"

As part of the Movember campaign, men are dubbed "Mo Bros" and women are "Mo Sistas."

Freitag said the Movember campaign has brought his company's team closer by giving it another shared goal.

"Participating in Movember is adding to the camaraderie of our team," he said. "We are regularly taking mustache 'progress pictures' and you can hear Movember-related conversations come up often in hallway chatter. And, there is some good-natured competition around whose facial hair is coming in the fastest."

Hoping to expand its participation in its second year in Movember is SEO.com, said SEO specialist Nathan Blair.

The women "are not expected to grow a mustache (but nobody's judging)," he quipped in a blog post. "However, they are welcome to support their Mo Bros by donating or promoting."

There are lasting company benefits from participating in events like Movember, beyond raising funds for cancer research. Those benefits include improved communication among the staff team, higher morale and improved productivity.

Creative activities like Movember can also reinforce the company's shared goals and direction within its team.
