Corporate Gift-giving: Greenery Is A Gift That Lasts
Labor Day is well past, autumn's upon us
, and the holiday season and the end of the year are approaching like a bullet train. For those of you thinking ahead to corporate gift-giving, we'd like to suggest a gift your associates and clients will enjoy throughout the entire season.
Pretend you're someone on your gift list, and imagine this scenario: A box arrives just before, or just after, Thanksgiving, while beleaguered colleagues are unenthusiastically planning the annual holiday party. The box is opened. The scent of evergreens wafts into the room. Inside is a magnificent fresh Christmas wreath, or length of garland, or evergreen centerpiece. Everyone inhales. Wow!
The mood in the room brightens. The beautifully decorated wreath, or lush garland, or stunning desk bouquet of evergreens, is put in place. The impending holiday event begins to seem like it might be fun. Through the next weeks, that luscious evergreen scent underlies everything that goes on in the office. People are humming seasonal tunes. They smile at one another.
Oh, there are other gifts that arrive. The lavish box of chocolates is greeted with delight until someone mentions all the calories involved. Instant guilt pervades the place. A basket of fruit arrives. Who's going to tackle a whole trophy-sized apple? Or risk dripping pear juice down their front? The grapes get nibbled. The bananas turn spotty.
And there's that desk calendar-and-pen set. But whose desk is it going to adorn? And who's going to get miffed about its ultimate location?
A lavish vase of artificial flowers arrives, glittering with artificial snow on artificial pine. It's quite politically correct, it's even quite beautifully proportioned, but it's, well, quite artificial. In a week it has begun collecting dust.
And someone went over the top and had a case of excellent California wine delivered, but the only place to share it is, of course, at the office party, and after the office party, nobody's going to remember who sent it.
Meanwhile, the big lush evergreen wreath, or garland, or bouquet, goes on being attractive and smelling wonderful. Mmmm! Aromatherapy! Everyone loves it.
The holidays come and go. The uneaten fruit, fruit flies and all, has gone into the compostable garbage. The chocolate and the wine have simply added to the seasonal poundage, and now everyone's dieting. The dusty artificial flowers move from desk to desk, along with the desk set, and eventually will add to some landfill. The
Christmas wreath, still fragrant but beginning to fade, is biodegradable. Bravo.
When you want to make lots of people happy, decorative evergreens are the answer. We think there's no contest.
