The Body Armor Vest
When most of us hear the term "body armor" our minds immediately conjure an image
of the clanking metal that might have been seen on battlefields in medieval times. But in fact, the body armor industry is alive and well, and being propagated by teams of experts armed with sewing machines, rather than the blacksmiths of old! This is so because today's body armor vest is generally made from special, highly resistant "futuristic" fabrics that you can actually rely on to save your life in a tough spot.
Body armor today is a far more sophisticated subject than it was in times gone by. Both lightweight and flexible, it can almost pass for normal clothing. When you're in a tight spot, the thought of the safety it will provide would make it very easy to wear indeed.
As was the case back when armor was actually invented, you can get different items for different situations and different parts of the body. The most commonly used piece of body armor today is the vest, and this is commonly worn by many different types of people; the military, law enforcement, and all types of security personnel to name a few. Less common items of body armor include hard helmets, shields (as might be used by riot police for example), and even complete riot suits.
In times of crisis or uncertainty, even politicians and high profile personalities from many countries will be advised to think about wearing some kind of protection. Personal ballistic protection is sadly, increasingly worn by ordinary people to protect them during the course of their work in busy cities. The kind of nylon fabric worn to protect wearers began its evolution in the flak jackets that were first worn in the Vietnam and Korea battle fields.
Now, the latest in soft body protection is fabric that can successfully defend the wearer against stabbing and shooting. This type of soft body armor has even passed the "California ice pick test." There are different levels of protection from ballistic attacks; level I, level II, level IIIA, level III and even level IV.
Go For The Most Protection
Since these items of protection are very expensive, it does seem that while you're at it, you might as well get the most effective type you can afford! Obviously, the more effective a protective garment is, the thicker or more substantial it will be. The less obtrusive items of body armor are the ones that will only protect you against a grade I threat. Because the thicker grade III garments are often needed, it makes sense to ensure that the product you buy fits you perfectly so you can be as comfortable as possible. Soft body armor is up to Level IIIA and only protects against handguns, for Level III and IV special plates need to be inserted in the front and back pockets of the vest. Level III and IV protect against rifle/machine gun fire whereas Level IV protects against armor piercing ammunition and Level III does not.
Important points to be aware of when buying body armor include the fact that when wet, some types of body armor will no longer be effective. This is why they often include a waterproof backing. Do a little research to make sure you're buying a product that will do its job no matter what you're doing. Vests based on the anti-ballistic materials kevlar and spectra do not 'degenerate' and are guaranteed to keep their anti-ballistic performance for five years. The latest armor is being designed according to ballistic limit testing by the National Institute of Justice. Manufacturers use the information as a basis for designing their products.
Comfort and Protection
Today's body armor, aside from looking very different, also feels different. For the most part, it is fairly comfortable (imagine sitting in the car trying to drink your coffee in a metal suit). However, modern armor does share one inconvenience with its ancient counterpart, in that in hot weather, things can get pretty sweaty in there. But in all, that's a small price to pay when you know that a possible aggressor is going to be thwarted in his or her attempts to hurt you. Some body vests have small slits at the side to allow for sweat evaporation, but of course this means that you'll have less protection in those areas. In order to prevent sweating the backing material of vest often consists of Coolmax. This material prevents sweating. Coolmax is more or less the same material as Nike and Adidas now use for their sports wear. A perfect fit of the vest is also very important for the comfort of wearing it.
