Unhand Those Business Office Supplies! And Other Tips For Staying Healthy At Work

Nothing strikes more fear in the heart of employees than the sound of a co-worker blowing her nose

. On her desk, a massive box of Kleenex. In the wastebasket by her chair, a massive pile of wadded up Kleenex. Good morning, she sniffles as you walk by. You know you should be sympathetic--it sucks to be sick! But all you can do is take a good hard look at the business office supplies on her desk and swear on your great-grandmother's grave that you will never, ever touch that stapler. For that kind of risk, they just don't pay you enough.

Here are some tips for staying healthy at work, whether it's flu season or not.

1. WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN. Every time you use the restroom, before and after you eat, after you use the fax machine or any other business office supplies that other employees handle. Also see: keep hand sanitizer at your desk, in wipe form or squeeze bottle. You never know who uses your phone while you're in the bathroom washing your hands, after all.

2. HOLD IT RIGHT THERE, MISSY, YOU THINKING OF SKIPPING BREAKFAST AGAIN? And by the way, running out to Dunkin Donuts for a sugar-raised does not qualify as breakfast. For goodness' sake, haven't you heard Breakfast is the most important meal of the day enough times by now? Them's the facts. Start your morning with nutrition, and you're a million times more likely to maintain your health.

3. TAKE A MULTI-VITAMIN, WHILE YOU'RE AT IT. It's good for you.

4. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. It's no longer a sign of slacking off to be seen at the water cooler frequently throughout the day. Drinking lots of water is the surest way to flush toxins out of your system as they enter. Also, it keeps you from craving snacks so much. Often when we think we're hungry, we're really just thirsty. And by the time we notice we're thirsty, we're already dehydrated. Refill a Kleen Kanteen each time for extra points.

5. TAKE WALKS. Taking frequent breaks is good for you in all sorts of ways. Sitting at your desk all day, staring at a computer is a recipe for back trouble and eye strain. Stretch, clear your head, breathe fresh air. Also, recent studies show that most Americans are woefully deficient in Vitamin D. A 15 minute walk in the sun without sunscreen gives you a healthy amount of Vitamin D, that just might eventually save your life.

6. TAKE VACATIONS. Vacations are to lunchtime walks what years are to days. Use your allotted vacation time. Many offices offer mental health days, too, now. Don't be afraid to use them, and use them well. By which I mean, RELAX.

7. BROWN BAG IT. Packing a healthy lunch will save you from hitting Mickey D's. If you don't have the time, visit the grocery store instead of fast food. Keep carrots and hummus in the office mini-fridge. Just say no to super sizing it.

8. DON'T TOUCH THAT STAPLER. Maybe it's a no-brainer, but if your poor colleague is sick, leave her business office supplies alone. Give a friendly wave from across the room. She'd do the same in your shoes.
