Your First Corporate Event Need Not Look Like Your First Corporate Event

You have a corporate event coming up. How do you deal with the all the issues involved? Take a deep breathe. Even a beginner can put on a great show. If you put in a bit of organization time, this will seem like vacation or at least a good coffee break.

The kind of program you will want to develop will depend greatly on what the point of the whole thing is. Are you celebrating or introducing a new product or CEO? Will the press be invited, or hoped for; or is this very much a production for insiders only? How many people are you planning for? 10 or 200 attendees will make a difference.

Depending on your budget your range of options will either broaden or narrow. Lack of funds will keep preparations to a minimum and likely close to the home office. This can be a blessing in disguise. Bigger bucks can mean a big hotel and a stage presentation to boot. But really big productions are usually left to professional planners.

Once you have a grip on goal and budget you can pick from the options out there. And there are a lot of options. Large corporations can have a musical revue written complete with original music and lyrics. Or maybe you will just borrow the MP3 player from the employee with the most musical taste.

Music is often the key to an event. Even having the office clown come up with some cute and hopefully clean lyrics is one option. Recorded or live music; background string quartet or rock and roll band the options for tunes are endless.

Themes for these productions can run the gamut from indoor to outdoor, family to comedy, wine tasting to new information delivery. There are hypnotists who can give you the latest figures on sales and comedians who will share the latest market insights or roast the CEO. Whatever you need is out there.

Back to how many people will attend. This is one area where you cannot afford procrastination. Unless the event is at the company office, you need to find a venue. Location is everything. Ask any wedding planner. But seriously, if you need something more than the company cafeteria then you best get cracking early.

Regardless of location you will need some sort of refreshment. Coffee, tea, and water are the bare minimums and it can go from there to 5 star chefs if your budget allows. Here is where a good caterer can save your sanity. After all, that is exactly what they are paid for.

Who or what will happen at the event? If a speaker is needed for introducing guests or emceeing the various segments of the show, then you can choose from a list provided by a bureau that specialized in speakers, or ask the local radio or TV celebrity to handle the honors. Sometimes the CEO will handle the job.

A corporate event can be a piece of cake. And with just a little planning and preparation nobody needs to know if this one is your very first.
