10 Tips To Prevent Pests In New York City
Residents of New York have long been plagued with pests of all sorts..
. from spiders and cockroaches to rats and termites, and from mice to raccoons. All five of New York City's boroughs are densely populated, so pest control often needs to be a coordinated effort with neighbors and adjourning buildings taking pest control efforts at the same time. It is particularly important to coordinate rat abatement efforts. One of the most important things you can do is to schedule regular appointments with an exterminator in New York.
Here are 10 tips to keeping your apartment, commercial property, or home free of pests.
1-Don't leave food out. If cockroaches can't find food in your kitchen, they'll give up and go elsewhere.
2-Only eat in the kitchen. This limits the pest problem to small sections of the house. Crumbs sprinkled all over the apartment means you will have pests everywhere. Keep all food, candy, drinks confined to the kitchen area and you'll enjoy pest-free zones in the bedrooms and living areas.
3-Keep furniture clean and food-free. Many living room couches contain enough food spills, crumbs, and half-finished drinks to for a dozen or more roaches to stay alive without having to leave the couch very often. This goes for many people's beds as well.
4-Change sheets regularly, and if you suspect bed bugs in your NY apartment, have a pest control service come out immediately.
5-Drain all water from sinks and tubs when you're finished with it. Household pests need water several times a day, and they will not be able to survive if there isn't sufficient moisture to keep them alive in your apartment.
6-Keep all food sealed in roach and rodent-safe containers (glass canisters, metal tins, airtight plastic food storage containers, etc.). Mice, rats, and roaches love climbing up to cardboard boxes, gnawing a hole, and making a new home amidst the cereal.
7-Sweep your kitchen every day, and clean up after spills immediately. Put away the breakfast items before you leave for work. Leaving crumbs on the counter and floors is a great way to maintain a robust cockroach and rodent population. It's an open banquet invitation.
8-Use bathroom or kitchen caulk to seal up cracks in the counters or along walls. This step can go a long way in keeping pests off the counters.
9-Keep your home tidy. Remember that pests need hiding places. If you have piles of clothes and newspapers, they will happily move in. They will also give you a nasty shock when you pick up the laundry to wash it.
10-Use window and door sealant to block out cracks and small openings along windowsills, all along baseboards, and outside doors.
