Aggrenox combines two effective medications - low dose aspirin (25 mg) and extended-release dipyridamole (200 mg). These medications work together to make platelets in the blood less sticky, thus, preventing the formation of blood clots. Aggrenox is a widely recommended medicine; therefore, you need to know certain important information regarding the medicine:

The drug should be avoided in patients allergic to any of its components

The drug should not be prescribed to patients allergic to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or to those who have the combination of asthma, runny nose and nasal polyps.

It is not advisable to give this drug to children or teenager due to the risk of Reye's syndrome.

This medicine can increase the risk of bleeding in the brain, stomach or intestine.

Aggrenox should not be given to patients with a history of stomach ulcers or to people who have a habit of taking alcoholic drinks regularly.

This drug should be avoided by pregnant women especially in the third trimester

Patients with severe kidney or liver problems should not be prescribed this medicine

Aspirin and dipyridamole can harm infants being breast fed. So, do not use this medicine while you are breastfeeding.

Some common side effects of Aggrenox include headache, upset stomach and diarrhea.

Your physician must be informed about all the prescription, over the counter medications as well as vitamins and herbal supplements being taken by you.

The medicine needs to be swallowed whole. Crushing or chewing should be avoided. This is important because the drug releases medicine slowly in your body and breaking or opening the pill will cause too much of the drug being released at one time.

Two doses of this drug should not be taken together.

In case of an overdose, one should immediately contact a physician.

Aggrenox cannot be substituted by taking each of its components separately. Separate consumption of the two components will not have the desired effect.
