True residual income is the ultimate goal of network marketing. It's what people build the business for. It can only be achieved if you're willing to take yourself out of the equation. That is, not to make the business about You.

You need to be the messenger, not the message. You job is to be a professional pointer - a pointer to a system which does most of the hard work for you.

The franchise business model is purely based around a proven system. They are popular because they are perceived as "turn key" businesses. When you buy a franchise, you get a complete set of instructions which you have to strictly follow.

Everything has been more or less sorted out for you, from how much to pay the casual staff, to the store furniture, to where the supplies come from, to the advertising and marketing.

Rigid systems are in place to help maximize efficiency and profits and to protect the brand of the franchise. Still, franchises are tough business. It can take a couple of years to break even, and some franchises fail to make any money for the owner.

Fortunately, there is a lot more freedom, and much less risk for independent representatives in network marketing. You are free to promote and build the business in a way that best suits you, and you don't have to deal with the heavy overhead that franchises have.

Although there are no set rules in how you promote your business, a system, a core set of step by step instructions that every person you bring into the business can use, is still essential, if you want to achieve the ultimate goal.

You must have a duplicable marketing system that trains your reps on how to promote the business. It should do two things:

1. Teach reps how to talk to prospects

2. Show the business and pay plan through third party tools

It's rare that an MLM company will have its own proven marketing system, but the most successful MLM leaders have created duplicable systems that continue to work over time, and their downline grows without their own direct input.

Your job, as a network marketer, is to refer people to third party tools that do the "telling and selling" for you.

Remember, a network marketing business is built on relationships. It always has been and always will be. The right way to build it is to establish a relationship with prospects first, then offer them the business if its appropriate.


It doesn't have to be an intimate relationship where you spend hours getting to know each other, but enough such that the prospect likes you and trusts you.

If you're building your business online, do it as if you would offline by building one-on-one relationships with people who you have a common interest.

Forget about all of the mass advertising strategies like Pay-Per-Click or renting email lists. These strategies don't duplicate.

Get to know people, and build bridges.
