2011 is almost here - New Year Goals and how to achieve them
With the onset of the New Year, so many of us begin to plan our goals, renew our hope about things we could not do the previous year, but plan on accomplishing in the next year. It's a lovely feeling isn't it, as you are wishing goodbye to the current year, especially if it was a lack - lustre one, to look forward towards the upcoming year. It feels like a fresh start, a clean slate, a new beginning, another chance.
Goals and dreams come in all shapes and sizes, big and small. Some of us, want to get that new job, some want to start a business, how about looking for a new relationship or getting more physically fit. There are habits to be overcome kicking that bad habit which you know isn't good for you but you'll do it anyways such as smoking or perhaps eating less sugar so you can get to your ideal weight. There is money related goals "I want to be wealthier this year, make more money" or "I want to save up money so I can buy that house". The list can keep going on.
January rolls around and we're all charged up, aiming right at what we've set out to do. We make honest attempts to start working on things get on the treadmill more so we can start exercising daily or decide we're going to cut out on that daily latte, make small adjustments to our budget to save money or start eating less, diet etc. Then comes February and March and we start to get a bit side-tracked with everything else that starts to fill our plate. Let's say our daily reality takes over. No we haven't forgotten our goals but they have simply slipped to the side, waiting for us to pick them up again. Couple of more months and we start to feel guilty that we're lagging behind in things we were so passionate about when we planned them, so we make an attempt to again revive and jump on it, only to give it up again in a few days or weeks. With so many starts and stops the year starts to come to an end and then we either begin beating ourselves or feel plain ol' bad about what we could not do.
Does this sound familiar to you? If you have found yourself in a similar scenario where you have wanted to do things but year after year felt like if you just had more time, or if this would have happened or that , in other words what are known as excuses', then perhaps understanding what keeps you from achieving them may hold the key.
If you are serious about your goals, here are some simple steps that will assist you in your journey
Simplicity is the Key Often we make too many goals or even if we have 1 goal, in our eagerness to accomplish it now, we tend to overdo things. Result we get overwhelmed. And that can't be good for anybody. So when you plan your steps, decide on easy and small steps, one at a time; remember you don't have to finish everything in 1 week or 1 month either. Each person is wired differently, try to figure out what will sustain things for you, and make it more consistent. Slow But steady does win the race.
How important is the goal to you - Figure out your reason of why you want to do something. In my experience, the more you see the benefits for yourself', the more likely you are to make an effort to accomplish things. But if you are doing something just because everyone else is doing it or everyone else thinks, this is what you should do, then ultimately these kind of efforts typically don't turn out to be successful in the long run. So stay true to yourself.
Ask difficult questions Sometimes just a simple exercise as asking yourself some tough questions what is keeping me away from doing something ? can reveal amazing insight. Your reasons could be genuine but most times, if you look at your answers honestly, you would know you were probably caught up in giving yourself excuses.
Instead of making Resolutions, rephrase You're probably wondering what I mean by this. Resolution means to resolve', to decide on something firmly but it doesn't include your actions, steps that you will take. What you want to put your focus on is the how'. I want something, how will I get it, and what will I do to achieve it. Also, the term resolution' and new years' makes most people subconsciously feel like it's something that would not work out anyways. Most people associate it and take it lightly like it's something you just do. And if you are subconsciously thinking it, you will probably find it challenging to achieve it anyways. So rephrase for your own benefit. Put some thought to how and what steps will you take to accomplish your goals once you've decided upon them.
Support and surround yourself with Motivation That's right, even the most self-motivated find it hard to stay on track long term. Surround yourself with tools, tips, resources and people who will aid and encourage your efforts.
Last and most important is Honesty and accountability to yourself That's right, there is nothing better than being honest to yourself and perhaps many times it is the hardest thing to do as well. It's just easier to convince yourself with why you couldn't do something. Unfortunately, there's no getting around it, sooner or later, if you are serious about your goals, you will have to be honest. Once you get into it, trust me it is not that bad and will even save you time by bringing you closer to what you're trying to do.
I hope these steps would assist you in giving a good jumpstart to your goals. It doesn't matter what month of the year it is that you're reading this or planning to get started, remember it's never too late and like they say Anytime is a good time to begin working on what you want!
