3 Fun And Educational Central Florida Attractions For Homeschoolers

Homeschooling is a popular and growing trend in the United States

. When trying to plan out fun and interesting activities for homeschoolers, there are plenty of things to do in Central Florida such as visiting museums, popular landmarks and learning about restoration. Here are three ideas to help get you started.

Central Florida Attractions: Bok Tower Gardens

When homeschooling your children, it is important to include several activities that revolve around a bit of history. One of the most popular historical Central Florida attractions is the Bok Tower Gardens.

Bok Tower Gardens was founded by Edward William Bok (1863-1930), a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Bok was a leader of the arts and crafts movement at the turn of the century and was the first to call Victorian parlors "living rooms." In the early 1920s, Bok came up with the idea for the Bok Tower Gardens. He would spend repeated winter months in the residential Mountain Lake community located next to one of the tallest hills of Florida's Lake Wales Ridge. Because he enjoyed his time spent there, Bok wanted to preserve the hilltop and create a bird sanctuary.

Years later, the plants in the Bok Tower Gardens provide shade to visitors, as well as refuge for squirrels and more than 100 different bird species. While there is no shortage of things to do in Central Florida, the Bok Tower Gardens is of special interest now to young people because the famous, 80 year old Singing Tower it is currently being renovated . Homeschooling families can visit the gardens, as well as the Singing Tower in order to view and learn about the renovation process and the rich history that makes the Bok Tower Gardens one of several educational Central Florida attractions.

Things To Do In Central Florida: The Lake Wales Museum and Cultural Center

One unique homeschooling activity that tops the list of things to do is a visit to the Lake Wales Museum and Cultural Center, specifically the Depot located at 325 S. Scenic Highway. Originally built as a passenger station by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1928 for around $51,000, the Depot is constructed of a combination of both brick and pink stucco. The main purpose of the Depot was to relieve traffic congestion in the downtown area.

One of several Central Florida attractions today, the Depot has a long and rich history. After passenger service to Lake Wales ceased to exist in 1954, trains no longer came into the Lake Wales Depot. Despite this fact, today the Spanish-style building, complete with a red tile roof, remains a landmark in Lake Wales and in 1974, construction began in order to convert the then empty Depot into a museum and cultural arts center for the citizens of Lake Wales. In 1976, the Depot re-opened and quickly evolved into one of the main attractions because of its new function as a resource center for the collection, preservation, exhibition and study of materials related to the history of Lake Wales, Florida. Now, when locals and/or tourists are looking for things to do, they usually make a stop at the Depot.

Things to do in Central Florida: Ridge Audubon

The Ridge Audubon is located at 200 North Crooked Lake, Babson Park, FL 33827 and adds to the list of many things to do for homeschooling families. The main purpose behind Ridge Audubon is to promote an interest, as well as an understanding, in wildlife and the environment.

At the Ridge Audubon, children have the opportunity of learning how to conserve natural resources and to learn about various species of birds and other wildlife. For others who are looking for things to do, the Ridge Audubon also offers people, young and old, the opportunity to walk along the many miles of trails within the park. Additionally, the Ridge Audubon hosts a variety of workshops for both children and adults that include things from bird watching to hikes and other types of seminars.

Homeschooling a child is sometimes more challenging than one would think. However, with a little planning and creativity, you will find that there are plenty of things to do in Central Florida as well as a number of interesting and educational Central Florida attractions that any child will greatly benefit from.
