Mobile communications have become almost an addiction to most Americans. In fact, people are spending more time texting and using their mobile phones than they do watching TV. Mobile devices are no longer just for the adult world; they are now being used by children as young as 8 years old. Its mind boggling to think of the business market potential if businesses learn to captivate this every growing audience.

I remember like yesterday when it was a big deal to have a Walkman Radio. Now people are flocking to the newest and greatest electronics for both entertainment and communication needs. People throughout the world are now using billions of electronic devices and we havent begun to hit the surface of what is to be in the near future. A poll was taken recently at the University of Southern California whereby people were asked which items would they rather do without; their cell phone and Internet, or their automobiles. Fifty four percent said their automobiles!

Cell phones are much more than just devices to make phone calls. They have become sophisticated devices that are more powerful than the computers from the 1990s. Businesses are now capitalizing on marketing to these smart phones via texts, movies and emails. The new trend with employees is to use their personal cell phones for business purposes. In many business environments having a cell phone is a requirement. Try telling someone during a job interview that you dont have an email or cell phone and theyll look at you crossed eyed.

With businesses having to run a lean ship due to excessive overhead expenses, companies are more open to employees telecommuting by working from home rather than take up office space at work. All you need is a laptop, Internet connection and a mobile phone and you have an instant office.

Social networks are taking communications to a new level for both social and business purposes. The old saying people talk is an understatement today. Blogging, posting and sharing has become a way of life for millions of people online. From Facebook to LinkedIn to Youtube, people have more tools for global communications than ever before in history. Selling products, marketing a concept or rallying for a political movement can all be done from ones living room using a simple computer and an Internet connection. Social networks can literally make or break a companys future for success. Social marketing is a term now used for branding and selling products online by tapping into these online social platforms that millions are glued to throughout the day.

In the old days it was common for small businesses to have an expensive computer server maintaining and managing the computers within the companys building. Today operating systems and data retrieval and sharing can all be done online from anywhere in the world. Conference calls, video conferencing and file sharing can be done instantly with employees without physical boundaries.

With cloud computing, people can now buy their Christmas gifts online, pay their taxes online and give meetings to people from anywhere at anytime. Its no longer where youre at, but rather when are you getting on (the Internet).

The cloud adds new computing potential that changes storage, processing powerful along with quick and easy accessibility. With security being the biggest concern, technology continues to advance by the day making the Internet a safer environment. And with companies becoming more competitive, cloud innovation is on the rise. Software known as SaaS (software as a service) is becoming the norm for software deployment. And now many of the software programs that run on computers can be run on mobile devices.

Many are calling this era the collaboration revolution with todays advanced yet simple to use computer and mobile devices. What we thought was incredible technology last year is todays old news. Mobile devices, social networking and cloud collaboration are more than just convenient toys. They are todays survival tools for businesses and even personal relationships. What a world we live in! Im anxious for the future. I just hope I can keep up with it!
