3D Movies: A Hit With the Masses

People who have watched the world of Pandora come alive in Avatar probably think that this movie started the 3D revolution, but then that is far from the truth. You will be surprised to know that this three dimensional technology has been in use from around the 1890s! Of course, the techniques used were rather crude and nothing in comparison to the startlingly real effects produced in Avatar.

It was in 1915 that the first so called proper 3D movie was made having the silent movie actress Marie Doro in the lead. But then it was not until the 1950s that 3D movies gained popularity, which happened with the super success of a 3D film, named Bwana Devil. But then because of the unreasonably high cost of production and lots of technical complexities the production of 3D movies decreased drastically over the years until they died of by the end of the decade. However this sudden craze for 3D movies followed by a total loss in interest and downfall continued for quite a few decades.

A revival happened in the 1980s with the coming of the IMAX 3D films. Popularity grew again steadily with quite a few successes like Friday the 13th Part 3 which released in 1982, The Man Who Wasn't There (1983), Jaws 3D (1983), Starchaser: The Legend of Orin (1985) and Transitions (1986). However it is true that Avatar (2009) broke all records and has helped in the sensational popularity of 3D movies since then. The movie was a visual treat and went on to become the highest grossing film in history eventually.

Also Avatar can be watched on Blu-ray 3D disc. For that you have to buy a Panasonic 3DTV or Blu-ray player, as Panasonic has clinched a deal that gives them exclusivity for the movie from December 1st 2010 until February 2011. If you don't have a Panasonic 3D TV then you have to wait until 2012. Also in the pipeline is a slew of blu ray 3D movies.

Well, this recent craze for 3D has inspired Hollywood filmmakers to try the 3D technology. As a result tons of movies came out in 3D in 2010: Arabia, Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, Clash of the Titans, Shrek Forever After, Street Dance, Toy Story 3, Despicable Me and a few more, all of which enjoyed reasonably good success in the theatres.

Plenty more 3D movies are scheduled to be released this year too (like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2). Most of them are looking to capture the stupendous success of Avatar and hopefully they will succeed.
