4 Essentials for Effective Strength Training Plans
4 Essentials for Effective Strength Training Plans
Creating good strength training plans helps accelerate your progress enormously. Knowing where you've been, where you are, and where you're going is of great help for making progress.
If you don't record your workouts, you don't know how much you're getting better. Or even if you're getting better
So, here are some guidelines to kick your strength training plans into high gear!
1. Plan Before You Go To The Gym
I've found that there's nothing more annoying than trying to put together your workout between lifts at the gym. OK, do I have 1 more set to do? 2 More? Oh, bollocks, I've been resting too long!
It only takes 5 minutes, but will save you much nerve wracking later. Look over your workout from last time, decide and write down what you want to shoot for this time, and then get in the car to go to the gym.
Saving time, worry, and brain cells? Priceless.
2. Record Everything
If it's part of your workout, record it. Yes, even that little bit of spur-of-the-moment I-was-feeling-energetic-and-did-some-extra-pushups.
If you measure it you can track it. And improve it ;-)
It takes only a few extra seconds to record this stuff, and then you can feel good about doing that little extra bit in your workout.
3. Set Realistic Goals
This is another simple aspect of making progress. But your goals must meet 2 criteria: (1) You must believe (in some part of your mind) that you can achieve them, and (2) you need to invest energy into them to bring them alive.
Sometimes a goal gets you energized just thinking about it. Other times you need to invest the energy, and only then will it be something you feel like working for - because you're already committed.
Either way, find a goal that you can go for. And then burn it into your mind as you go to the gym to accomplish it!
4. Review Your Progress Every Few Months
It's important to review the progress you've made every few months.
When I do this I discover how much I've come along and how much more progress I could have made if I was more dedicated. It's not always fun, but it's really beneficial for improving.
And it really does work!
But there's more to working out than just good strength training plans. To get the most out of it you need to choose the right lifts, the right food, and the right amount of time to rest.
