4 Reasons Why Your Mattress Sags Easily

Mattresses are designed to work for at least 10 years

. Some technologies like latex and memory foam usually last for more than 10 years. However, there are certain things that can speed up the deterioration of your bed. If the 10 years of your mattress' time has not been exhausted yet but you can already see sags and depressions, you might be doing something to speed up its deterioration.

Here are the top 4 reasons why your bed sags easily:

1. You are not using a box spring.

Most people cut back on bedding costs by dispensing with the use of box spring. Several studies and experiments have confirmed that people not using box springs are more likely to see sags and depressions in their bed.


Box springs do not just provide additional height to your bed. They also help protect the interior of the mattress. They provide support to the internal structure of the mattress so that the whole bed can hold heavier weight far more capably.

2. You do not take good care of it

Care and maintenance is needed to prolong the life of the bed. If you subject it to the same weight and same sleep position every single night, it will naturally wear out on one area only. You would want to even out wear.

Rotate or flip your mattress. Most modern mattresses today are one-sided only. One-sided beds cannot be flipped. If you are using such a mattress, try rotating it regularly to even out wear.

3. You are sitting on the edge of the bed

Mattresses sag easily if you use the edge as a sitting area. Although most beds have integrated edge system, they can still wear out quickly. If you sit on the edge of the mattress, you are subjecting only one side of it to heavier weight. This messes up the internal structure of the bed.

Try placing a sitting area close to your mattress. An ottoman should work well as a temporary sitting area if you don't have the financial resources to buy a sofa.

4. The bed frame does not support the mattress properly

If you are using a bed frame with wooden slats beneath and the wooden slats have wide gaps or spaces in between, the internal structure of the mattress will surely get damaged. Your mattress will press between the spaces. This will cause indentations on the bottom part of the bed.

You should do something about these issues if you don't want to deal with a saggy mattress any time soon. If you know what is causing your mattress to sag, you can prevent it from happening.
