4 Steps To Earning A Promotion
It used to be that, if you worked at a company for a while and just did an average job
, you would get promoted. You didn't have to do a phenomenal job. You just had to have been there for set period of time. Today, even if you've been at a company for years, bringing them in tons of money with your hard work, you might be stuck in your position forever if you yourself don't tell your boss why you shouldn't be. Here's how to do it.
Show them the money
If your particular work or ides have brought the company lots of money, show your boss the proof. My friend worked for years for a music school giving singing lessons. However, clients were assigned based on what the committee decided, so she only got as many as the company sent her way. When she wanted a promotion to be on the board as well as being a voice coach, she showed the board proof of all of the new clients that had come to the school specifically because they heard how good she herself was at teaching people how to sing. With those numbers proving she had tactics to bringing in more clients, my friend was made vice president of the board.
Create the job you want
Maybe the skills you bring to the table are very useful to the company, but don't fit your current job description, but you've been putting them to use anyways. Make the case for a new position that should be created just for your niche expertise. It shows you pay close attention to the company's needs and, it helps you avoid using the actual word "promotion."
Ask at the right time
Your boss arrives at work already with a full workload, full schedule and head full of worries. Your approaching him at the water cooler saying, "I wanted to talk about my place in this company" just makes you a nuisance at that point. Catch your boss at the right time like at the office holiday party after he's had a couple of glasses of eggnog or when you're all done talking shop at a business lunch but you're still enjoying your salads. People are more open to new ideas when they are relaxed. Think about yourself when you're in a rush to catch a bus and somebody tries to talk to you and you get so annoyed. If you are taking a relaxing stroll down a shopping street in no rush at all, you're more open to hear out somebody who approaches you to talk.
Be ready
Learn whatever you need to learn in order to fulfill that position before asking for it. If you have to figure out Excel, become fluent in Dutch, or achieve a certification for something, accomplish these things before you ask your boss for the job. This makes you a very tempting candidate for the position because the company won't have to waste time or resources on training you.
