5 Basic Tips for Dog Training
Dog training is essential if you are to have a manageable and pleasant dog that understands how to behave with other dogs as well as humans
. Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind when training your dog.
1. Training should be a fun activity and not an unpleasant one. Dogs have short attention spans and you should limit your training sessions to 5-10 minutes. If your dog fails to learn a complex task after a few tries, don't reward him and wait a few seconds before trying a simpler task instead. Always make sure you end a training session on a positive note - this is very important.
2. All dogs should be familiar with basic commands such as come, sit, stay, down and heel. Ideally your dog should be able to respond to these commands off leash. Additional commands you should try to teach your dog are: leave it, stop it, enough and give it.
3. Never, ever include punishment, yelling, hitting or electric shocks in your training sessions, as mentioned before, training should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. If your dog fails to do what you want or does something unwanted, simply ignoring him will eventually get him to understand that this behavior will not be rewarded and is therefore undesirable.
4. Dogs that are food-oriented perform best when given treats as a reward, for some dogs their owner's pleasure is their greatest reward. Determine what works best for your dog and use that. If you are going to give food rewards then make sure they are small tiny pieces that don't take long to eat otherwise you'll lose your dog's attention. If petting and praising is what works for your dog make sure you pet him in a way he enjoys the most and be sure to make a big fuss of the dog.
5. Vary the commands you use in each training session and try to keep the training interesting and mentally stimulating for your dog. Once your dog is performing what's being asked of him in a quiet environment, start working to perfect his response time. Reward your dog only if he sits for a few seconds as opposed to simply touching the ground with his rear end. Gradually increase the time you want your dog to sit or stay. Ideally you should strive to achieve a dog that sits calmly and in a relaxed manner for one full minute.
Dogs really love pleasing us and this makes them easy to train, but be sure to arm yourself with a lot of patience and persistence and remember to never lose your temper!
