5 Negative Side Effects Of Macromineral Overdose
The macrominerals are seven nutrients (calcium
, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulphur) that your body requires in relatively small amounts. When consumed in the right quantities they support optimal health. However, eating too much of any of the seven macrominerals can have a negative impact on your body. In this article I will be discussing five of the adverse effects of macromineral overdose.
1) CALCIFICATION OF THE SOFT TISSUES:- If you stick to the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for phosphorus it can support strong bones and teeth, help activate the B complex vitamins and much more. However, consuming extremely high levels of this macromineral (4g per day or more) can negate these benefits and lead to calcification of the soft tissues. This is a condition where calcium is deposited on the soft tissues and major organs which makes them harden and prevents them from functioning properly.
2) DEHYDRATION:- Calcium is another nutrient that promotes the development of strong bones and teeth and also keeps your blood healthy. Unfortunately, overdosing on this macromineral (by consuming 3000mg or more per day) can cause you to become dehydrated. Dehydration has a number of adverse side effects which include joint damage, organ damage, muscle cramps, thirst and weakness.
3) FLUID RETENTION:- Chloride is a macromineral that helps maintain a proper balance of fluids inside and outside the cells as long as you stick to the RDA. However, consuming too much of this nutrient can have the opposite effect and make your body's cells retain fluid. This has a number of unpleasant side effects which include painful swelling and stiffness.
4) HEART PROBLEMS:- Potassium and sodium are two very important nutrients when it comes to heart health. Potassium regulates your heartbeats whilst sodium maintains regular heartbeats. Unfortunately, overdosing on either of these macrominerals counteracts these benefits and can lead to irregular heartbeats and in the worst cases heart attacks.
5) HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE:- When the correct levels are consumed chloride and sodium both help keep your blood healthy by maintaining blood pressure and volume. However, consuming too much of either one can lead to high blood pressure. High blood pressure has a number of negative symptoms and can damage your blood vessels and vital organs.
When it comes to the macrominerals there is a fine balance between healthy consumption and overdose. If you stick to the RDA for each macromineral listed below then you should be able to find this balance:
- Calcium RDA = 1000mg-1200mg for adults.
- Chloride RDA = 750mg for adults.
- Magnesium RDA = 300mg-400mg for adults.
- Phosphorus RDA = 700mg for adults.
- Potassium RDA = 4700mg for adults.
- Sodium RDA = 1600mg for adults.
- Sulphur RDA = No RDA but most sources suggest a daily intake of between 800mg-1000mg.
