5 Reasons Why You Need A Home Energy Check Up
The home energy check up is a process that can be carried out either by yourself or a hired professional and team of experts
. The purpose of this activity is very important and even crucial when it comes to saving energy as it allows homeowners to determine exactly what areas of their home can be improved to provide greater efficiency and money saving opportunity.
The check up is most effective when it is carried out with all your family members present. They should also understand and implement the improvements that need to be made. As the adults, it is your responsibility to help our younger generation understand the value of our energy and thus learn to use it wisely and efficiently.
Many people wish to save home energy in their own ways, but only a small amount of them make use of the resources and tools that are available for you - such as; a home energy check up, home energy yardstick, government incentives etc. However, if you have a family, your individual efforts may be overridden by the irresponsible actions of other family members. To prevent this, you must educate everyone in your household about what you learn yourself. You can start off by explaining them some basic energy saving techniques:
1. Switch off lights in rooms that are not in need of light at the time. This is the most common energy conserving technique, yet only a handful of people make use of it.
2. Turn off computers TVs instead of leaving them on standby. The standby feature is often given far more credit than it deserves. People assume that the standby feature has identical energy saving potential to switching the product or appliance off. The fact is that an average TV on standby uses only 40% less of the energy it uses when it is being watched, whereas turning it off cuts down the energy usage by 100%.
3. Open your curtains and windows at day time, close them at sunset. This is another more or less ignored technique for saving energy. It allows your home to absorb heat and keep it inside for night time so that you have to use less energy to heat it up if you need to.
4. Use energy efficient light bulbs in your home. Energy efficient light bulbs have numerous advantages over the usual filament bulbs - they last 10 times longer, consume 25% of their energy, and emit a bright, white light instead of a yellow one. They also don't waste as much heat energy as they don't heat up as much.
5. Improving the exterior of your home by filling in any cracks and holes also saves a heap of energy. In fact, if you are able to eliminate all sources of cold air coming into your home, you can use 70% energy to heat up your home as there will be no unwanted escape.
Saving energy at home is such an easy thing to do, yet so many people are unaware of this. It is important to notice that you will not know what you need to do unless you carry out a home energy check up, which makes the list above dependant on you doing so.
There could be many, many more reasons why you could need a home energy check up, but the ones stated above are found to be the main reasons why people consider doing a check up for their own home.
Checking your home energy usage is the first step towards making your home energy efficient, but it can be done repeatedly to unveil other possible improvements that need to be made on a regular basis.
The examples above are just a few of the very vast amount of ways you can save your home energy and your money almost instantly. The fact that global climate change has been allowed to escalate to such a dangerous level indicates the lack of responsible actions that people are willing to undertake. You can do a lot more than what we think!
