5 Techniques For Fishing For Walleyes

Before you start out for a day on the water fishing for walleye

, you should know a few good fishing tips for catching marble eyes. You can use five different techniques for fishing and each one has a benefit that can help with catching a walleye. You can drift, troll, cast or use a planer board or just drop the bait into the zone. If you have some time, you try a few different techniques each day and see how each one works for you. All you need is your gear, bait, boat and good fishing weather.

Drifting

If you are unsure where the walleye are on the water, you can drift. Drifting may not be as effective as some other techniques, but when you have some time and the walleye just aren't coming to you or hiding in the spots where you normally catch them, you can cast and drift. The ideal day for drifting is when there is a slight wind or a small current to move the boat. However, if the winds are strong, you may cover to large of an area and miss the fish altogether. You need to have patients when drifting over a large body of water.

Vertical Drop

When you find the walleye school, you can drop right into the mist of it. The vertical drop works great for catching walleyes in the weed beds if you get right over it and drop about six inches off the bottom. One way that works very well is to feed the line down into the water slowly. This way, if any walleye are coming or leaving the school, you may just catch one. Otherwise, let the bait drop into the zone and wait awhile before bringing the bait back in. You can keep doing this until you get some bites. This is the time to use a live minnow and a jig. Use the vertical drop when ice fishing and during the summer days when the fish are schooled deep in the water.

Casting

Casting from a boat or from shore is another technique to use when fishing for walleyes. The way that you cast and reel in the line will matter. You need to cast and let the bait sink. Then you can bring up the tip of the rod to move the bait as you slowly reel in the bait. The idea is to attract attention of the walleye when you are bringing the bait in slowly. If you make fast movements or reel in the bait to quickly, you can spook the walleye and lose the bite. If you are going to cast from shore, you need to use this technique when the walleye are in the shallower waters or you won't get out far enough. An overcast day or at night would be the time for shore casting.
