Many people that work in the corporate environment often feel they are just part of a giant rat race. It is not often that the corporate organizations take the time out to recognize the efforts of their employees yet this can be a great way to keep them motivated. Sometimes companies shy away from recognition awards as they think they are going to cost them a fortune. But actually, you can select award that fits within your budget. The motivational impact they have on your employees could very well result in them paying for themselves.

Scenarios for Using Awards

There are several scenarios in which you could use trophies to motivate your employees. If you have a division that is working on a specific project, you could use a floating trophy to award weekly productivity. This will help keep employees focused on weekly targets and goals so they don't fall behind. It can also encourage some healthy competition between employees that motivates them to work harder and possibly get through their tasks more efficiently.

You could also have multiple awards for different functions. For example, you could have a "Problem-solving" trophy which gets awarded to the person who most effectively managed to overcome challenges posed by the project that week. You could also have a "Progress" trophy for the person who is most ahead of schedule. A third trophy could be the "Best Team Player" trophy, helping to ensure employees are conscious of their working relationships with their colleagues.

Another typical award scenario is in sales teams. You can award monthly trophies for the salesperson of the month. This can motivate salespeople to reach their weekly and monthly sales targets. Many retail stores reward employee-of-the-month trophies which are presented to employees who interact best with customers and work colleagues. This simple form of recognition goes a long way in motivating staff members.

Why Recognition Works to Motivate Employees

While many business owners say that financial reward is the best motivator, this isn't always the case. Quite often, people can be drawing good salaries and receiving bonuses but unless that is linked to actual recognition, after some time it becomes meaningless. Most people like to feel they have a purpose in life and that they are adding value to the world. When this is recognized through a simple thing like a trophy, it gives people a sense of accomplishment. This sense of accomplishment then makes them feel that they are doing something worthwhile and it motivates them to keep at it in the workplace. Awards can also motivate underachieving employees to work harder and meet their targets and goals. When they see their work colleagues receiving recognition, they may be inspired and want to receive the trophy in the future.

Types of Trophies

There are many different types of trophies that can be used for recognition and motivation awards. You can opt for the traditional type of cup-like trophy or you can select more modern plaques and other designs. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive type of award, look at the Perspex awards. These can be fashioned into stylish trophies and once complete, often look very similar to the more expensive glass trophies. If it is going to be a floating trophy, it is a good idea to have it on a stand where award winners' names can be engraved. You can also design the trophy according to a specific theme. For example, if it is a motivational sales trophy, you could call it the "Shooting Star Award." The trophy could have a series of smaller stars grouped together angling up to a single large star.

Things to Keep in Mind When Using Trophies to Motivate Employees

Make the award and trophy something that employees would be proud to receive. It need not be a pricey award but it must look like something worth receiving. Also when you present the award, make a ceremony out of it to underscore the fact that receiving the trophy is something prestigious. It doesn't need to be a big event but take time out in the weekly or monthly meeting agenda to make the presentation. It will make employees feel that it is an award worth working toward. If it is a more prestigious annual award, make it a special event so the recipients are made to feel really special.
