. The scenery is picture perfect complete with placid lakes, mesmerising glaciers, snow clad hills, white powdery beaches, crystal clear seas, and the list is infinite. Although, it is a long haul travel destination, the country does not disappoint those on a shorter visit. Here is a tried and tested formula to make the most out of New Zealand on a short 5 day trip.
However, before booking your
flights to New Zealand, you have to be realistic in your expectations. Five days would just about let you sample some of the most famous visiting spots in South Island and not the entire New Zealand. So, here goes a 5 day itinerary planner for your New Zealand trip.
Day 1 - Christchurch
Christchurch has a distinct English character and resembles a laid back English countryside. The Cathedral Square, Christchurch Botanic Gardens, New Regent St Mall, and Victoria Square are the top attractions in Christchurch.
Day 2 - Akaroa and Mt Cook
Drive down to Akaroa after spending the night in Christchurch. This seaside town retains some delightful glimpses of French colonial life. Take a boat cruise here and come up close to mesmerising creatures like penguins and dolphins. Once you have had your fill of Akaroa, its time to drive up to Mt Cook, the highest mountain of New Zealand and a World Heritage Site. Exhaust yourself skiing on the Tasman Glacier or simply behold the astounding snowy beauty of this amazing land before you turn in for the night. Undoubtedly, you will be left wondering that paradise was just a few cheap flights away, while you remained ignorant of it.
Day 3 - Queenstown
Sitting on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown with Fiordland national park at its West, this picturesque destination has a world of exhilarating activities like hiking across gorges and jungles, white water rafting, mountain climbing, bungee jumping, fly fishing, jet boating, and kayaking. In Queenstown, one can also pick up colourful exquisite local crafts. Not to be missed is the Skyline gondola trip. It would be dusk before you know it. Dine at one of the fine restaurants in Queenstown and spend the night here.
Day 4 - Milford Sound and Back
Hop on to a bus for Milford Sound. It may not be an exaggeration to say that nature is at its best here. Even the journey to Milford Sound takes you across beautiful landmarks like Te Anau, Mirror Lake, and Homer Tunnel. Numerous cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and pristine islands define the landscape. The crystal clear waters reflect the surreal beauty of the place. Spend your day checking out Milford Sounds seductive charms like Mitre Peak, Anita Bay, Bowen Falls, and the Elephant and Stirling Falls before heading back to Queenstown by late evening.
Day 5 - Return to Christchurch
On your final day, its time to return to Christchurch. Set out east towards the coast from Queenstown. The coastal road will take you through many charming landscapes like Ashburton, Timaru, and Waimate.
